Traditional locs vs. Microlocs
Traditional Locs
• Larger sections
• Lower installation & maintenance cost
• Faster installs & maintenance
• Fewer locs overall
Microlocs
• Smaller sections
• Lightweight & versatile
• Longer installs & maintenance
• More locs overall
Both require consistency & patience to achieve beautiful, healthy locs.
Live a good retie ✨
Let’s talk microlocs maintenance: part three
This is the last point & possibly the most important one.
✨ Keep One Loctician
Your loctician learns your hair texture, tension needs and capacity, and the exact rotation pattern that keeps your grid neat and your locs healthy. Switching it up can throw off your pattern and cause inconsistencies.
Outside of poor quality service, irreconcilable issues with your stylist, or moving.. I’d highly recommend sticking with your loctician once you find the one that does a great job and has great customer service.
Let’s talk microlocs maintenance: part two
✨Protect While Sleeping
Use a satin or silk bonnet or pillowcase to reduce friction and keep your locs lint-free and neat while you sleep. Personally, I prefer and recommend all my clients use a scarf at night.
✨Separate Locs After Washing
To avoid locs marrying (joining together), gently separate them at the roots while damp, especially after washing.
✨Hands Off
Avoid excessive twisting, pulling, or playing with your locs. Constant manipulation can weaken your roots and cause thinning over time.
Let’s talk microlocs maintenance: part one (repost)
✨Retighten Regularly
Microlocs typically need retightening every 6-10 weeks, depending on hair texture and growth rate. Staying on schedule helps prevent matting, thinning, and breakage.
✨Keep Your Scalp Clean
A healthy scalp supports healthy locs. Use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo and focus on the scalp first, letting the suds cleanse your locs as they rinse out.
✨Avoid Heavy Products
Creams, gels, and waxes can cause buildup that’s hard to remove from small locs. Stick to light oils or leave-in sprays to moisturize.
✨Moisturize Weekly
Even though your hair is loc’d, it still needs hydration. Use a light water-based spray with aloe, rosewater, or essential oils to keep your locs soft and prevent dryness.
Ever wondered how much my reties are? Well, here’s the answer..
My reties are $250 flat. While some locticians charge by the hour, I charge by the service.
This allows me to provide quality work without my clients worrying about the time it takes to complete the retie.
If you have microlocs or want to start your journey, how much do you/would you pay for a retie? 🤔
