Fun on my small country poultry farm.

The ducks and chickens are going to have a new home.
Thanks to for the great (and quick) build!

With my work schedule and some personal issues, I’m going to have to downsize. Ducks. Adamsville. Actively laying. 10 total - 2 Cayuga, 2 Golden 300, 2 Black Swedish, 2 Buff, 2 Silver Appleyard. Raised from babies from Metzer Farms.

I’ve heard that if you don’t have a Roo, sometimes a hen will take over the Roo’s duties and even crow. I now have a 3yo henrooetta and it’s the funniest sound!

The ducks are in molt and look horrible. Only getting up to 2 eggs a day from them. Switched to Dumor but I'm switching back. Didn't have this problem last year!

Down two more hens within the last two weeks. No outward signs of illness, just being over three years old. This time another Rhode Island Red. I have one RIR left. 😕
On a positive note it’s less animals I have to transport to the new property, but the chickens aren’t going to be the difficult animals. That’s going to be the ducks!

Went outside this morning to find one of my RIR on her way to the other side. My first batch of hens are all 3yo now, so I know they won’t be around much longer, but I love my RIRs the best of all. I ended her suffering and buried her in the back yard.
Thanks for the eggs and friendship mama Red.

After saving one of my RIR from being egg bound just two days ago, last night I lost one of my Barred Rock to the same. Both varieties are 3 yo now, so things like this were to be expected. Still, she was a good hen and good layer. Run the fields sweet girl!@

Thanksgiving is next door and Christmas is down the block! Duck eggs make the best substitution for chicken eggs, adding extra fat (moisture and stability) to baked goods and fuller flavor. Come get a dozen or two for your holiday baking!!

This is where I got my girls. Great stock!

Sassy, Faith, and Buffy think they must share the nesting duties. Princess was in there but she decided she needed a snack instead of getting her picture made.
Oh, and how many eggs are they setting?
Three.

Recently some of my customers have expressed concern over eggs where the white was “cloudy”. Congratulations! You have received an egg that is super fresh! https://lifehacker.com/are-cloudy-egg-whites-safe-to-eat-1847244700
Now if the white has a pink tint, do trash it! And I ALWAYS recommend cracking each egg individually into a bowl before adding to any mixture or other eggs (like for scrambling a big batch for breakfast) just in case one doesn’t meet best standards.
