Craig Rhyan Art
Craig Rhyan Merchant - Michigan based artist I often use subjective colors and distortion of scale to present an ordinary object in a unique way.
Growing up in a secluded wooded environment, I learned early on in my life that all creatures play an important role. It is no surprise that these early encounters would be reflected in my artwork through large scale depictions of insects, frogs, and fish. I continued to expand on this idea by representing the relationships that are shared between man and the environment. It is my goal to connect

While you’re out exploring the Lantern Festival at John Ball Zoo, be sure to swing by and say hello to the otter near the front entrance! 🦦
Built from trash collected from local waterways, see if you can identify what it’s made from.

“Seahorse” is a hollow sculpture with areas of translucent resin. When the sunlight hits it just right, the sculpture seems to glow from within. ✨

I’m excited to share that my otter sculpture is now on display at John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids! 🦦
This piece has been a two-year journey, so it’s incredibly rewarding to finally see it installed. Built from trash collected from the Grand River, the sculpture celebrates wildlife and the environment.
This permanent sculpture is part of the zoo’s new otter exhibit opening in May, and you can already stop by to see the sculpture now. I’ll be adding a few finishing touches in April, but the piece is officially out in the world!
