💊 TODAY’S PRESCRIPTION: CLEAN YOUR BUILD PLATE

Got a print that suddenly won’t stick?

Before you start changing nozzle temperatures, bed temperatures, flow rates, speeds, infill, supports, the phase of the moon… 🫠

Clean your build plate.

Your hands leave oils on the surface every time you touch it. Add dust, filament residue, and whatever else has decided to move into your workshop, and eventually your perfectly dialed-in first layer may start acting like it has never met the build plate before.

🧼 The treatment:

• Let the plate cool down
• Remove it from the printer if possible
• Wash it with warm water and dish soap
• Rinse thoroughly
• Dry it with a clean, lint-free towel
• Try not to touch the printing surface afterward

For routine cleaning, this is often more useful than constantly wiping the plate with whatever solvent happens to be sitting on the workbench.

And remember:

A clean plate gives your first layer a fighting chance.

If you’re still having adhesion problems after cleaning, THEN we start diagnosing the other suspects: first-layer height, bed temperature, filament moisture, plate condition, leveling/calibration, and so on.

What’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve tried to fix a bad first layer before realizing the build plate was the problem? 😂

🍝 THE SPAGHETTI MONSTER GOT US THIS TIME.

We had a print failure.

We were printing some hooks and a case for the hooks on the textured build plate. Everything looked good… until it didn’t.

And there was one thing we didn’t do:

👉 We didn’t use glue.

Now, before somebody grabs their pitchfork:

No, glue is NOT automatically required every time you print on a textured plate.

But…

It can absolutely help.

The textured surface is designed to provide mechanical adhesion, and with the right filament, temperature, first-layer settings, plate condition, and model footprint, you can get excellent results without adhesive.

But some prints have less margin for error.

Small contact areas.
Tall parts.
Corners that want to lift.
Long print times.
Multiple parts on the same plate.

That’s where a thin layer of the right adhesive can act as a little extra insurance.

In our case, we had multiple parts on the plate, and once adhesion started to fail, the printer didn’t exactly stop and call for a technician.

It just kept going.

And that’s how you get:

🍝 SPAGHETTI.

The good news?

A failed print is just a test we didn’t intend to run.

Dr. Layer’s diagnosis:
🩺 Bed adhesion wasn’t strong enough for the job.

Treatment:
Clean the plate properly, use a light layer of adhesive when appropriate, and make sure the first layer is doing its job before committing several hours of print time.

Prevention:
Don’t just ask, “Can I print this without glue?”

Ask:

“What’s my margin for failure?”

Because sometimes spending 30 seconds applying a little adhesive is a lot cheaper than spending 4 hours making printer noodles. 😂

🩺 TODAY’S PRESCRIPTION: WATCH YOUR FIRST LAYER

Before you walk away from a 6-hour print, spend 30 seconds watching the first layer.

Seriously.

That first layer is your print’s foundation. If it’s already looking rough, the printer probably isn’t going to magically fix itself 4 hours later. It’ll just produce a much larger failure.

👀 Things to watch for:

• Lines that aren’t sticking to the bed
• Gaps between extrusion lines
• Filament being smashed excessively flat
• Corners lifting
• Inconsistent extrusion
• Nozzle dragging through previously printed material

If something looks wrong, stop the print early and fix it.

A 30-second inspection can save you hours of printing, a bunch of filament, and the classic:

“Well… let’s see what happens.”

Spoiler: it usually doesn’t get better. 😂

🧪 DR. LAYER HAS A QUESTION:

Why are you filling that entire part with plastic?

Seriously.

I see people crank their infill up to 50%, 75%, even 100% because they want a stronger print.

But here’s the thing:

100% infill does not automatically mean a better or stronger part.

For many functional prints, increasing your wall count can be a much more useful way to add strength.

Think about it:

🧱 More walls = thicker outer shell
🔲 More infill = more material inside

And depending on how the part is actually being loaded, those extra walls may be doing far more work than stuffing the interior completely solid.

Plus, 100% infill usually means:

💰 More filament
⏱️ Longer print times
🔥 More heat accumulation
📈 Potentially more opportunities for printing problems

So instead of automatically reaching for 100% infill, ask:

Where is this part actually going to break?

Then design and print for THAT.

That’s one of the biggest advantages of 3D printing.

You’re not just making a shape.

You’re engineering how that shape behaves.
