Guessing a Date 03/08/2026

Approximate Dates

Someone just told me that I shouldn't use approximate dates, only fact-based dates. I disagree. Don't get me wrong, I am very careful about approximate dates and there are instances where I don't even try.

I found this article by FamilySearch that is very helpful.

- I use 20 years when calculating parents ages from a child.
- I use 2 years to calculate the difference in spouses birthdates - this can be quite a few years off, but at least it puts them in the correct century.
- I don't even try to guess children's ages, especially if there isn't a marriage date. For me, there are just too many variables.

What are your thoughts? What methods do you use?
