The Marketing Plan cartoon - Marketoonist | Tom Fishburne A few year ago, Mark Ritson wrote a handy guide to creating a marketing plan and critiqued those who make "PowerPoint decks by the yard." Mark wrote: "Most marketing plans are PowerPoint presentations. Nothing wrong with that. But they are just too damned long – 50, 100, 200 slides in a plan. This...

Search engines are becoming AI-driven “answer engines” that give users information directly instead of sending them to websites, which is why many publishers expect fewer clicks in the coming years. This doesn’t mean websites are no longer important — it means they are now being used as sources for AI answers. The goal is shifting from just ranking in search results to making sure your business is the trusted, clearly understood source that AI systems rely on when they generate answers, especially in expert-driven fields.
This shift benefits industries where trust and expertise matter most, including healthcare, legal services, food safety and manufacturing, engineering, finance, and professional consulting. The fundamentals of good SEO still apply: clear service pages, high-quality written content, real-world proof like testimonials and case studies, and strong explanations of who you serve and what you do. What’s fading is low-quality, keyword-stuffed content designed only to chase rankings; what’s rising is authoritative, well-structured content that AI can confidently reference.
News publishers expect search traffic to drop 43% by 2029: Report AI answers are taking clicks from publishers. Media companies warn that Google Overviews and chat experiences are speeding up traffic loss.

Looking to instantly improve your web content?
Yoast — the industry-leading SEO platform behind the popular Yoast SEO plugin for WordPress — shares a classic writing strategy that still works wonders today: the inverted pyramid.
Journalists have used this style for decades because it puts the most important information first. Don’t hedge, don’t bury your key point halfway down the page — lead with it. Tell the essential story in your opening paragraph, then use the rest to add depth.
This approach is especially powerful online, where readers want fast, clear answers to their questions.
A great reminder from the experts at Yoast!

🌐 Google’s “Hide Sponsored Results” Update — and Why It Matters
Many marketers tell customers they can reach the top of Google without SEO or great content — “just buy your way to the top with ads.” Unscrupulous marketers exploit that fear of missing out, draining budgets for short-term gains. But when the ads stop, so does the flow of business.
Now, that reality is becoming even clearer.
Google’s latest update groups all paid listings under a single “Sponsored results” section and adds a button to “Hide sponsored results.” It’s a small but symbolic shift — users can now collapse the ad block after scrolling past it, hiding those paid placements for the rest of that search.
While it’s not a full escape from ads, it signals something bigger: users are demanding authenticity and trust in search results. The data keeps proving the same thing — great, relevant content that speaks to your customers’ needs is always the right move. There’s still no shortcut to the top of Google.
