Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) impacted 15-20% of moms before the COVID-19 pandemic. Now in its midst, experts estimate the rates of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders as much higher.

Maternal Mental Health (MMH) disorders include a range of disorders and symptoms, including but not limited to depression, anxiety, and psychosis.

These disorders and symptoms can occur during pregnancy and/or the postpartum period (together often referred to as the perinatal period).

When left untreated these disorders can cause devastating consequences for the mother, her baby, her family, and society.

New and expecting mothers face not only changes to their lifestyles, but also changes to their bodies and hormones. Each woman’s experience will be different.

For some, accommodating the changes of pregnancy and having a baby may come easily – they will adopt new routines and their bodies will return to pre-pregnancy shape and chemistry with little difficulty.

For others, there may be physical and mental health struggles that arise.

March of Dimes Report Card 12/17/2021

The March of Dimes released their 2021 Report Card, offering a comprehensive overview of the maternal and infant health crisis.

The report grades the U.S. states, Puerto Rico, and 100 cities on preterm birth rates, and includes other information such as infant death, social vulnerability, low-risk cesarean births.

It also reports on state efforts related to Medicaid expansion and extension, doula and midwives legislation/policies, among other factors β€” and outlines important policy solutions that can make a difference.
