Notice: Between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM today, you may hear outdoor warning sirens as testing is conducted. A backup system will be used during this period while repairs to the outdoor warning siren system are underway.

UPDATE: Aberdeen’s emergency sirens are working.

Following recent questions about the status of the siren system, I wanted to share a quick update. We recently completed a successful test of the backup activation system located at the Aberdeen Fire Department, providing an additional layer of reliability while upgrades are underway.

We also have new equipment on order for the primary activation system. As part of that project, the computers and software at both activation locations will be replaced and updated to improve long-term reliability and functionality.

The tornado siren system is currently not operating as intended. We learned that additional equipment, software, programming, and a dedicated computer are required to restore full functionality.

City staff, Emergency Management, Dispatch, and Dakota Electronics have been working through options. In the meantime, the Police and Fire Departments are developing a backup plan that would allow trained Fire Department personnel to manually activate the sirens from Fire Station 1.

At this time, we have not conducted a full test of the system. We also know that 3 of the city’s 18 siren locations are currently non-functional and are evaluating replacement options and costs.

For tomorrow’s weather, residents should not rely solely on outdoor warning sirens. Please ensure you have multiple ways to receive severe weather alerts, including weather apps, NOAA Weather Radio, local media, and Wireless Emergency Alerts on your mobile device.
