A small tip that makes a big difference: ask once, then wait. ⏳

When you ask your child to do something and they don't respond right away, the instinct is to repeat it, rephrase it, or jump in to help. It feels like you're being supportive.

But here's the thing — many children on the spectrum need extra time to process. To take in the words, make sense of them, and plan how to respond. That quiet stretch isn't them ignoring you. It's them working. 🧠

And every time we repeat or rephrase too soon, we accidentally hit "restart" on that whole process — so they have to begin again.

So try this: ask once, then silently count to ten before you say anything else. Ten seconds can feel like forever in the moment. But that pause is often the single most helpful thing you can give your child.

It's one of the simplest tools our BCBAs use — and one of the most powerful. 💛

This week we asked you to tell us about a great thing a kid did — and Aberdeen, you did NOT disappoint. We are not exaggerating when we say this was genuinely hard to pick. We read every comment more than once. 💛

Just look at these kids:

🛻 An 8-year-old who tows his little brother around the yard on his 4-wheeler so his little guy never feels left out. That's a big brother with real heart — he noticed someone feeling left behind and did something about it. Emotional intelligence alot grown-ups don't have. 🧡

🪀 A kiddo so big-hearted he gave away his very own yo-yo so another child wouldn't go without. No hesitation, no being asked — he just saw a kid go without and fixed it. That's a heart of gold in the making. 💛

🥞 A 5-year-old who surprised mom with breakfast in bed for her birthday. Five years old and already understands that love is something you DO for the people you care about. We absolutely melted. 🥹

🚗 And a 13-year-old who entertained his 2-year-old nephew for HOURS on a long car trip — patiently, happily, just to make the little guy giggle. No phone, no complaints, no reward. Just a big kid deciding a little one's happiness was worth his time.

Every single one of these stopped us in our tracks. Patience. Generosity. Looking out for the little ones. Thinking of others first. Parents — these are the things that matter most, and you are clearly doing the work. You should be so proud. 🧡

We promised to pick our favorite, and after going back and forth more than once, the one that truly melted us was Alana Sparling's son — that 13-year-old and his hours of giggles. That's the quiet, big-hearted kindness this whole thing was about. 🏆
