Did you know 68% of refugees, especially young people aged 15–24, experience mental health challenges, including cases of attempted su***de, as reported by Humanitarian Action in 2025.

Since 2021, through the LAB UGANDA project, music has been a tool to support mental health and psychosocial well-being in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement.

Young people find safe and inclusive spaces to build resilience, express emotions, reduce stress, strengthen confidence, and support their emotional well-being.

According to Transcultural Psychosocial Organisation-Uganda 2025 findings, reported su***de cases in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement decreased from 10 cases in 2024 to 4 cases in 2025.

While many factors contribute to mental health outcomes, community-based initiatives such as therapeutic music programmes play an important role in creating supportive environments that promote healing and resilience.

Only 14% of refugees in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement complete primary education, according to Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports.

Through the power of music, our trained Music & Life-Skills teachers equip young people with the Life-Skills, and career guidance they need to thrive, while our Back to School campaigns encourage children and young people to stay in education.

Last year, thanks to your support, a survey conducted in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement on Menstrual Health Management (MHM) programme participants, revealed increased knowledge, reduced stigma, and improved hygiene practices among girls during their menstrual periods.

This progress has contributed to reduced school dropout rates and improved school attendance.

Through the LAB UGANDA project in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement, girls and young women are accessing menstrual hygiene education, reusable sanitary pads, and back-to-school support campaigns, helping them remain in class and continue learning with dignity.

Overall, more girls are now confidently attending school during menstruation, creating better opportunities for learning, retention, and brighter futures.

“I used to be in a gang group but when I joined the brass band I found a home.” stated Isaac Wori

Isaac, fled South Sudan and lives in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement.
He is now part of the Divine Community Brass Band and an All-Star Band of 32 outstanding young musicians from Brass for Africa programmes.

Until they are safe, we continue to use music to restore hope for youth and young people in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement.

Every girl deserves an opportunity to learn with confidence and dignity.

Through the LAB UGANDA project in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement, Eunice Nyoka, a healthcare ambassador, and Head Girl of Yoyo Secondary School, is empowering both girls and boys with knowledge on Menstrual Hygiene Management.
Her efforts are helping reduce stigma, promote confidence, and keep girls in school so they can continue learning without fear.

Menstrual Hygiene Management is more than health care, it is about education, protection, confidence, and creating brighter futures for refugee girls and young women.
