Auto update date and time
In business, you often have to create a dated document, such as a monthly payment voucher, on a recurring schedule. You can save yourself some time by adding a date function that automatically updates the date each time you create a new voucher.

Place the cursor where you want the date to appear and then navigate to the Insert | Date & Time item on the Ribbon. You'll have your choice of formats—just be sure to check the Update Automaticallybutton before you click OK.

The Internet is a vast and powerful resource and can be overwhelming for some users.
You don't need the http:// portion of a web page:👌
When entering a web address, you do not need to type http:// or even www in the address. For example, if you wanted to visit Google, you could just type and press Enter.
To make things even quicker, if you are visiting a .com address you can type google and then press Ctrl+Enter to type out the full address.

Google Search the world's information, including webpages, images, videos and more. Google has many special features to help you find exactly what you're looking for.

Problem: An application is frozen

Sometimes an application may become stuck, or frozen. When this happens, you won't be able to close the window or click any buttons within the application.

Solution 1: Force quit the application. On a PC, you can press (and hold) Ctrl+Alt+Delete (the Control, Alt, and Delete keys) on your keyboard to open the Task Manager. You can then select the unresponsive application and click End task to close it.

Solution 2: Restart the computer. If you are unable to force quit an application, restarting your computer will close all open apps.

To enter today's static date: Hold down CTRL and type a ; (semicolon).

Hold down the Shift key and click at the desired end spot. All the text in between will be selected.
2. Quick way to select a single word—Double-click anywhere in a word and it is highlighted.
3. Quick way to select an entire line—Click once on the left side opposite the desired line. Make sure you are far enough to the left so that the cursor has changed to an arrow.
4. Quick way to select several lines—Click and hold down the mouse button on the left side opposite the first desired line. Drag the mouse down to include all desired lines and release. Make sure you are far enough to the left so that the cursor has changed to an arrow.
5. Fast way to highlight an entire paragraph—Double-click on the left side opposite the desired paragraph. Make sure you are far enough to the left so that the cursor has changed to an arrow.

Most people use the Cut-Paste (Ctrl-x Ctrl-v) route to move text from one location to another within a Word document but there’s an alternate way as well. Highlight any block of text, press F2 and then place the cursor at the spot where you wish to move that text. Press Enter and the selection will be moved.

Inserting a video into a slide
Microsoft PowerPoint has built-in features that allow a video to be played from a slide. If the video you want is located on the Internet, we recommend that you download the video to your computer, then insert it into the slide. Doing so will result in a more smooth video playback on the slide.
Additionally, if the PowerPoint slide deck will be stored on a USB flash drive, it is best to save the video file to the flash drive first, and then insert it into the slide using the steps below.
1. Open the Microsoft PowerPoint program.
2. Open the slide deck you want to add a video to or create a new slide deck.
3. Select the slide where you want to insert the video.
4. In the Ribbon menu bar at the top of the program window, click on the Insert tab.
5. On the Insert tab, click the Video option, then click the Video on My PC sub-option (shown below).
6. In the Insert Video window, navigate to where the video file is located on your computer, select it, and click the Insert button.
7. The video can be played by clicking the Play icon on or just below the video.
Tip: If desired, you can move the video to any place on the slide by clicking the holding the left mouse button on the video, and then dragging it to the desired location.

Uninstalling Windows software
If a program is no longer being used, or additional space is required, it may be necessary to uninstall or delete the software.

How do I know what to delete? If you don't know what it is, we suggest that it not be removed or ask someone who knows before proceeding.

Con: Not all programs support or use this feature.
1. Open the Control Panel or press the Windows key, type Control Panel, and then press Enter.

3. Within the new window, select the program you want to uninstall and click theChange, Remove, or Uninstall button.

How much RAM can my computer have?
Computer memory aka RAM.
The total amount of memory, or RAM, that a computer can have is dependent on the motherboard installed in the computer and the operating system. In general, most motherboards will support either two or four memory modules, but the type of memory can differ widely from one motherboard to the next.

Before answering this question its a good idea to determine first what type of computer you're using. Do you have a OEM computer (e.g. Acer, Apple, Dell, or HP) or a custom built computer?

Microsoft Excel Tip
It is possible to start a newline within a cell in nearly all spreadsheet programs.
In the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet program, press Alt + Enter to create a new line within the same cell. You can create many new lines in a cell by repeatedly pressing the Alt + Enter key combination.

Verify data is encrypted
When sending confidential information over the Internet, such as usernames, passwords, or credit card numbers, only send it securely. To verify this, look for a small lock (Internet explorer browser) in the bottom right corner of your browser window or next (left or right) to the address bar(Firefox and google chrome respectively). If visible, this lock should also be in the locked position and not unlocked.

We also suggest making sure the URL begins with https.
While the lock is in the locked position, data is encrypted, which prevents anyone from understanding the data if it's intercepted. When no lock is visible or in the unlocked position, all information is plaintext and could be read if intercepted. If a web page is not secure, such as an online forum, use a password you wouldn't use with protected sites, such as your online banking website.

Yearly Preventative Maintenance for Computers:
• Backup your hard drive as an image, so if your PC ever crashes you won't have to reinstall from scratch. This should be done twice a year, just to be safe.
• Either you, a friend, or a professional should do a thorough cleaning of the computer. This goes beyond simply using compressed air and actually opening it up to get rid of all of the smaller bits and pieces of dirt stuck in there.

Solution 1: If your computer does not start, begin by checking the power cord to confirm that it is plugged securely into the back of the computer case and the power outlet.

Reducing this is easy, it will make your PC launch noticeably faster and lighter upon first load. To change the items running at startup, go to Run using the hotkey Windows key + R, and type "msconfig." A small window will appear, select the Startup tab. From here you will be able to turn off many startup programs, which can shave several seconds (or minutes) off your boot time. (Note Windows 8 has moved this functionality to the Task Manager). Try to make sure you research what you are turning off as some processes might be needed by third party programs or drivers you have installed.
