Hello there !

Just want to share the wonders of the Candelabra trees at our Ranch.
Breath taking with their yellow flowers and surreal shape ; don't you think ?

They were named Candelabra because of the yellow flowers that form on their ridges making a visual comparison to burning candles !
Neither the flowers nor the trees give off any scent but they still attract pollinators like butterflies, bees and insects.
Monkeys at the Ranch like to eat the fruits that the trees occasionally bear and birds the seeds.

Despite the severe drought we have experienced over the last two months our Candelabras kept flowering, They are incredibly water wise trees . During the dry season they store water in their trunks so that they do not get dehydrated.
However, beautiful and fascinating as they are, Candelabras are poisonous and need to be handled with care. They produce a milky sap that can cause blindness, skin irritation and poisoning in humans and animals.
Our clever goats and sheep will not browse on them !
We also prune the trees to avoid clusters which could harm our cattle while grazing.

It is a strange paradox indeed that the sap is said to still be useful in local medicine to treat
illnesses like coughs, malaria and HIV !
I was also pleasantly informed by herdsmen at the Ranch, that when mixed with our local ghee the sap can be applied topically to heal sores and wounds.

Wonders never cease. Have a lovely day.

Maama Candace is doing very well. 12 days after surgery. Her body score has improved and her feeding and water intake are excellent !

We are happy to share here a few hard and fast rules about handling dystocia.

1. When an ewe or doe has shown no progress during 30 to 40 minutes of full labour, examine her to determine whether the kid is positioned correctly.
2. Never try to force the cervix open. This often leads to hemorrhage, shock, trauma and infection.
3. Never try to remove a lamb or kid that is in an abnormal position. First correct the position. Avoid excessive force. It may result in shock, hemorrhage, trauma, infection, fertility problems or prolapse of the uterus.
4. After removal of the lamb or kid by assistance through the birth canal or C section place her in an isolated recovery area and keep her warm with blanket wraps.
5. Give her fresh water and feed. It could take a while before she gets back on her feet. Tempt her to drink more by adding molasses to the water.
6. Take her temperature several times a day over the next few weeks but most especially for the first few days. She will run an abnormal body temperature when battling an infection and will need treatment.
7. BOTH LOW AND HIGH TEMPERATURES ARE LIFE THREATENING AND CALL FOR VETERINARIAN ATTENTION.
Normal temperature should lie between 38.5 and 38.7 degrees Celsius.
8.Call your Veterinarian if she fails to urinate for 2 days after surgery or if the urine is very brown or pulse like.
9. Keep an eye on the incision and report to your veterinarian any oozing of pus or serum. Also let him know if you observe any popped stitches.
10. Call your Veterinarian to remove all stitches after 14 days.

Ntojo Happy Goats wishes you happy farming days !

Dystocia. It is not always rosy here !

Our Maama Candace 7 years old had a cesarean section to remove the kid. Has been treated with antimicrobials ,anti inflammatory and pain relief drugs. For quick revovery she is now on the home run !

This gives us an opportunity to answer one of the many questions our guests often ask ... " Do I really need a Veterinarian on my farm" ?
The answer is YES !

He will help you amongst many things to design programs for disease prevention; vaccination; parasite control; kid management; disease screening and bio security plans.
He will develop a treatment protocol for common diseases. One which your herdsmen and helpers can easily follow.

When a goat develops a disease the vet will diagnose it and prescribe medication or surgery. He knows the differences in dosage, administration times and when it is safe and when it is safe for humans to consume the meat and milk your goats produce.

This week end was very hot at Ntojo Happy Goats Farm.

Did you know that goat kids love sunbathing too ?
These clever cute animals understand very well that their bodies need Vitamin D.
In the mornings they are happy to lie out in the sun but will seek out shade in the afternoons and wait for their maamas to come home and feed them !

Happy Sunday !
Ntojo Happy Goats is thinking about you all our friends .

Hope you are all having a lovely weekend.
We are happy grazing
Goats, Sheep, Boran cattle together . Multi Species grazing.
Diversified ranching.
Producing different marketable products.
Allowing us to diversify our income.
Perfect because the different species prefer different vegetation.
Pastures grazed with multiple species have more uniform defoliation. The uniformity contributes to forage quality and resiliency. Forage growth remains constant . After every grazing event we expect plants to reset to the same stage of growth. This stops weedy and unpalatable plants from taking over !

Wishing you a happy and successful week.

Busy clearing unwanted plants.
Goats are amazing Bush clearers. They help us clear over grown bush.
Herbicides can kill good plants and machines can damage the land. We are happy working with our happy goats to clear the land without disturbing the soil or leaving synthetic chemicals.

Wishing all our farmer friends a happy farming day.

1. Crested Cranes are the tallest bird. Can stand over 3 ft from wing tip to wing tip.
2. They live in Marshes and flat grass land but build their nests very high up in trees.
3. Often found in the midst of cattle herds. They use cattle as cover to prevent prededators from easily accessing them.
4. They are monogamous. Stay with one partner for life.
5. They love dancing . Are great dancers.
6. They have distinct call which sounds like honking !

Love them and protect them. They are an endangered species Their population is said to have declined to just about 65,000

Tick control( a farmer's menace ) starts with clean cattle !

We use a plunge dip once a week.
A bath designed to immerse our cattle in liquid pesticide. Dipping destroys parasites which infest their skin. The only effective way to control scab, ticks, lice, blowfly and kids with one product.
