A brand strength, closely related to Brand Equity, is the value that is carried by a brand. It’s essentially a marketing term that denotes the perception of consumers towards the brand or the value invested in it over a period of time.
Though the definition usually varies across organizations, some would like to term Brand Equity as the premium that a company charges because of the reputation and name that it enjoys because of constantly delivering good products that are remembered.

Pioneer Kenyan Olympian Daniel Matasi Rudisha, the father of 800m record holder David, passed away on Wednesday evening at War Memorial Hospital in Nakuru, 160km northwest of Nairobi, aged 73.

The news was confirmed to Nation Sport by David.
David, who is the Olympic 800m champion and 800m World Record holder, said his father passed away on Wednesday night after he suffered a heart attack.
He said that his father, who was diabetic and high blood pressure, had been admitted at the hospital for the last four days after his kidneys failed.
"He was admitted at intensive care unit and had actually recovered and was in the normal ward," David explained.
"He successfully went through dialysis well on Wednesday and those who visited him left him at 10pm on Wednesday in high spirit. It is shocking that he passed on."
David said his father was due to be discharged Friday.
"He is my hero and the man behind my athletics success" said David.
A grief-stricken David had earlier this week taken to Twitter asking his followers to pray for his ailing father. One of the tweets showed his forlorn face alongside that of his bed ridden father in a hospital ward.

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa captain Faf du Plessis scored an unbeaten century to lead his side to a comfortable eight-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the first One-Day International at The Wanderers on Sunday.
After winning the toss and electing to field, South Africa bowled the visitors out for 231 in 47 overs before chasing down their victory target for the loss of two wickets and with 67 balls remaining.Kusal Mendis (60 from 73 balls) top-scored for Sri Lanka before he was one of a trio of victims for leg-spinner Imran Tahir (3-26 in 10 overs), the pick of the home bowlers. Seamer Lungi Ngidi (3-60) also made a solid return to the team after four months on the sidelines through injury.
South Africa never looked troubled in their reply as Du Plessis (112 in 114 balls) and Quinton de K**k (81 from 72 balls) put on 136 at more than a run-a-ball for the second wicket.Du Plessis’ century was his 11th in ODI cricket and continues his fine form in the 50-over format with 259 runs in his last four innings, during which time he has only been dismissed once. The second fixture in the five-match series will be played in Pretoria on Wednesday. Both teams are using the series to fine-tune their selections ahead of the World Cup in England and Wales that starts in late May.

Numerous brands benefit from this, while the competitions themselves require the finances provided by these deals to thrive.
We take a look at 8 big brands that are involved in sponsorship of soccer on the African continent.

The importance of sports has not been sufficiently appreciated by African governments for it to be integrated into their national development plans. There is no doubt that sports could play a critical role in attaining peace, development and stability.
Some African countries have sports policies but the majority are fragmented and uncoordinated. Moreover, the ministries in charge of sports are often sandwiched in other ministries. The ministries or departments in charge of sports suffer from underfunding and are unable to support priority activities, let alone establish and enforce policies. For example, Steiner (2008) noted that the challenges of sports development in Ghana are a result of the fact that activities are limited since they are held but once a year. The athletes at the end of the competition go back to their region and village to wait a year or two for another regional event, making it difficult to develop new talent. In the case of the United Republic of Tanzania, a sports policy has been in place but it has suffered from a lack of implementation (Mwisukha and Mabagala, 2011). In Benin, a sports policy is in place, too, yet the government has no capacity to implement it. In Burkina Faso, there has been progress in implementing its sports policy (Keim and de Coning, 2014). In the case of Kenya, Keim and de Coning (2014) state that sports policies and legislative arrangements are out of date, with poor strategic planning development by the government. The above study noted, however, that the Government of Kenya’s efforts are recognized in areas such as capacity-building and training as well as in providing an enabling environment in which civil society and the private sector could support sports activities. From the study of Keim and Coning (2014), it can be seen that a number of African countries should be assisted to implement their existing policies and a number should be helped to develop realistic and practical sports policies.

JACK JOHNSON
Sport (Years Played): Boxing (1897-1938)
After becoming the first black heavyweight boxing champion, Jack Johnson faced the undefeated white boxer James Jeffries in 1910. Before they met in the ring, Jeffries took a personal jab at Johnson saying that he was "going into this fight for the sole purpose of proving that a white man is better than a Negro." But in the 15th round of their match, Jack knocked his opponent out and handed Jeffries the first loss of his career. The result triggered riots across the U.S. Johnson was one of the first celebrity athletes, with a lucrative side career endorsing various products; he was also famous for dating white women. In 1913, he was convicted on trumped up charges of transporting a woman across state lines for "immoral purposes," and after living in exile for 7 years, returned to the U.S. and served 10 months in prison. Efforts continue to obtain him a posthumous presidential pardon.

SPORTS AND TECHNOLOGY
Hawk Eye technology
Just as it sounds, this technology uses 6-7 high-end cameras situated above the field of play (e.g. a birds-eye view) to analyze the flight and trajectory of an object being used in sports competition. Most commonly used in tennis, cricket, rugby and volleyball, Hawk-Eye Technology has been in use since 2006 in tennis and is more accurate than a judges eye.

Benefits of this technology:
Hawk-Eye technology helps to take an error-free decision in cricket, lawn tennis, rugby league, football, and baseball.
This technology has reduced the criticism of the players and spectators about the decision of the match referee.
By analyzing the movement of the balls through this technology, the umpire can take an error-free decision quickly when the game is going on.
