Design without Borders! We have just collaborated with the pre-hospital unit at Oslo University Hospital to illustrate a poster for how to use personal protection equipment correctly, as there are very few out there that are good. We have made all the illustrations available for download, so every region and country can both translate and make adjustments according to their own routines. Please share & feel free to continue on making the posters fit for health care workers in Uganda. They are also available in English! Let's keep our health care workers safe ❤️
Let's not forget the on-going lack of general-purpose handcarts in most developing countries. We see many images of people (mainly women and children) physically carrying heavy loads, often to the detriment of their health, education and security, yet there's no evidence of any organisation actively addressing this impedance to progress and development. It's a typical “elephant in the room” situation. An obvious and adverse situation being continually overlooked and ignored.
Handcarts are necessary elements of progress in farms, markets and communities, wherever animal and motorised load-carriers are absent.
Let's find ways of making suitable, reliable and durable handcarts available to those who need them if they are ever to escape from drudgery and hardship.
Yes, bringing water supplies nearer to communities is necessary and beneficial, but if it results in more water being carried more frequently, then there's probably an even greater need for handcarts.

Calling all problem solvers!!🗣🗣

In a bid to have more resources that focus on the application of design within the African context, we are proud to present “HCD STORIES FROM EAST AFRICA”, a design course that teaches critical mindsets, provides tools, and gives practical examples to problem solving FOR Africans, WITH Africans, and of course, BY Africans, with a storytelling twist😊

Filled with story narrations, tutorial manuals, and exercise workbooks!

Reach out for more information on how you can access this toolkit.

With SERIOUS excitement,
The DwB team✨

The design team got to prototype a "fixed cooking station" made primarily from rammed earth. Take a look at the process behind the work meant to reduce unintentional burn injuries among children in informal settlements. Share your thoughts and questions on this with us and stay tuned for more updates! 😊

Weekend is here!🤗
In the fight against COVID-19, getting vaccinated is key to protecting us against serious illness if we are exposed to the virus. You are not 100% bulletproof, but you have a pretty good armor.
Keep staying safe, and continue to adhere to the recommended SOPs as we get into the weekend!

The first edition is only in Norwegian, but the second edition will be in English. We would love to hear your opinions and if you will be interested in reading it😄
And as to our Norwegian speaking base, you can pre-purchase your book TODAY, by following the link down below.

🛠️ Some of the work in progress!🛠️ A "fixed cooking station" designed as an improved safe cooking solution primarily made from rammed earth that accommodates room for food preparation, cooking, and storage of sharp objects. The same mold can ideally be used by up to 5 households in an informal setting.

Every year, children in Uganda under the age of 5 suffer from unintentional injuries mainly caused by burns, falls, and cuts, to mention a few. Research conducted within 615 households in informal settlements showed a prevalence of almost 900 incidents annually, caused by exposed fireplaces, unsuitable playgrounds, poor waste disposal, and open drainage channels. Design without Borders, in collaboration with @makere and @imperiallondon are working to pilot environmental modifications that have been designed to try and reduce some of the injury risks among children in low-income urban areas in Uganda.

Excited to be testing the cooking station soon!! And we'll be sharing the other ideas being prototyped!😊

The world is complex and needs equally complex solutions to match that complexity. We often think we need “simple” solutions but these wouldn't be up to the task we need them for. Bad design complicates things unnecessarily and confuses us. However, good design can “tame” that complexity. The ultimate reason we need complexity is so we can UNDERSTAND users…..something design empowers us to do.

_Living with complexity

There is currently a lot of information being circulated about different remedies promising to help "cure" covid. Whereas some foods may help treat some of the symptoms of the virus, overall, we should aim to maintain a balanced diet and eat foods that boost our immunity. Be careful about what you're advised to take by others, and ensure to crosscheck with a health professional to avoid harming yourself. Continue to practice the SOPs, and get your covid-19 vaccination from the @ministryofhealthug.
Stay safe & Stay healthy!✨

As designers, most times we don't know the answers and are faced with ambiguity in every project. The most important thing, however, is to get comfortable with the process of not ALWAYS having the answers, and be open to the limitless opportunities that present themselves once we make ourselves vulnerable✨

We often find ourselves stuck wondering if what we're doing is actually worthwhile.... If there's any meaning or purpose to our work. As practitioners of Human-Centered Design we sure have these moments. This week's #dwbwww is reminding us that if we are intentional about our cause and follow our guided intuition long enough, it all makes sense in the end. Here's to another humpday, and a beautiful rest of the week!✨

Every week at DWB we do a #WWW_wise word Wednesday. This time Lawrence is sharing some thoughts around #design and #innovation.
The world is currently consumed by the term "innovation" and yet very few can clearly articulate what it really means and how to actually achieve it. At #dwbafrica we see that design provides "the way how"...the process, the tools and the right kind of #mindset.

We’ve all heard about the misinterpretation of “drinking sanitizer” as a preventative measure against Covid-19. On the contrary, this is extremely harmful to your health! Remember to fact-check any covid-related information.

Episode #1: TB amidst covid...

The pilot episode of #nandi&tendo was inspired by the increasing number of TB cases amongst adolescents that are going undiagnosed due to the similarity in symptoms with the #coronavirus
TB and other respiratory diseases are still very common. The message from our health guardians is to seek medical assistance first and avoid self medicating.

Share widely & let’s all stay on the safe side!
