Top Ten Artists Tips When Working In the CG Industry

1) Always leave some obvious but minor mistakes in your work when submitting shots for initial review, and this gives your lead or supervisor an opportunity to demonstrate his intelligence.
Don't argue with your lead or sup, even if you know they made a mistake. A "yes" with smile goes a long way.

2) Lincoln once said "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." Think you know your buddy at work, wait until he is made a sequence lead.

3) Keep a good relationship with middle management; they have the power to destroy you and a company.

4) Give yourself very impressive credits and titles on IMDB and Linkedin; your achievement is only limited by your imagination and ego.

5) Put some technical books on your table, such as "Python" or "C++", and always insert programming jargons in conversations with colleagues here and there; they will make you appear very, very knowledgable and important.

6) Don't just quit and take a gig at some known facility if your motivation is to show you are better than people. These days, many career college graduates have fairly impressive resumes, thanks to rapid technology development and movie studios' hunger for profit. You are not fooling anyone but yourself, and you are no longer special, just a member of a vast international workforce.

7) Don't trade your precious time and social life with meaningless titles like "lead…" or "senior…"; unless your are financially compensated accordingly.

8) You may feel like a supreme human being when you can rig and animate a six-legged fish in Maya or create a turd tornado simulation in Houdini, but no one really gives a sh*t. A dental hygienist has much more respect and understanding from public than you have.
So there is no need to act like you just healed a sick, get real and drop that ego, it's just a job that pays bills.

9) Don't expect to retire gracefully in the industry. Your career lifespan generally ends when you reach 40s, and you'll be replaced by newer tools and younger, cheaper career college graduates. What do you do from there? Well it's your problem.

10) If you're just starting in the CG industry, there is still time to leave. This field is over crowded, and it's time to start thinking outside the box.
