NWSC works to restore water supply in Masaka city following power and network challenges - Daily Post Uganda 10/06/2026

According to NWSC, the interruption was initially caused by a power outage that affected production at the city’s water treatment plant. The situation was further compounded by a technical failure on the water distribution network, resulting in reduced water availability across several areas.

Although electricity has since been restored, the utility provider noted that the treatment plant is currently experiencing a phase failure, which has delayed the resumption of normal operations.

NWSC said its technical teams are working around the clock to address the fault and ensure that water supply is restored as quickly as possible.

The corporation apologized to customers for the inconvenience caused by the disruption and thanked residents for their patience and understanding during the restoration process.

NWSC also pledged to keep the public informed through regular updates as repair works continue and efforts to normalize water supply progress.

Nile Breweries Limited, NSSF, MTN MoMO to equip 1,500 retailers with business skills - Daily Post Uganda 05/06/2026

The programme, dubbed GRIT (Growing Retailers Innovatively Together), seeks to enhance the capacity of bar owners, stockists and retail managers by providing practical training in financial management, stock control, sales and marketing, responsible retailing, digital adoption and long-term business planning.

The initiative was officially launched in Makindye Division, where the first cohort of more than 300 retailers underwent training.

Speaking at the launch, NBL Managing Director Nkanyiso Mncwabe said retailers play a vital role in both the company’s operations and Uganda’s broader economy, making their growth and sustainability a key priority.

“Retailers are a critical part of our business and of Uganda’s wider economy. Our goal is to ensure that the retailers we work with are not only selling more, but building stronger, more sustainable businesses,” Mncwabe said.

He added: “Through GRIT, we are empowering them with practical skills that help them manage money better, control stock, improve sales, trade responsibly and plan for growth to run their business successfully.”

The 2026 programme builds on previous editions of GRIT, through which more than 1,560 retailers were trained in 2024 and 2025.

This year, the initiative has been expanded to include a stronger financial inclusion component through a partnership with the National Social Security Fund (NSSF). Under the arrangement, participating retailers will be introduced to NSSF SmartLife Flexi, a voluntary savings product designed for workers in the informal and semi-formal sectors.

The programme will provide training on social security, long-term savings and financial planning, while also supporting retailers to enroll and begin contributing to the scheme.

NSSF Managing Director Patrick Ayota said the partnership will help extend social security coverage to a segment of Ugandans that has traditionally remained outside formal retirement savings arrangements.

“Many small business owners and entrepreneurs contribute significantly to Uganda’s economy, yet they often operate without structured social security or long-term savings support,” Ayota said.

“NSSF SmartLife Flexi was created to give such individuals a flexible way to save for the future. By integrating this solution into the GRIT programme, we are making social security more accessible to retailers and helping them build financial resilience beyond day-to-day business income.”

Ayota revealed that within just 13 months of its launch, NSSF SmartLife Flexi has attracted more than 81,000 members who have collectively saved over Shs126 billion.

The initiative will also continue promoting digital financial services through a partnership with MTN MoMo, enabling retailers to access mobile money solutions that support safer and more efficient transactions.

MTN MoMo Corporate Sales Manager John Isabirye said digital tools are increasingly becoming essential for the growth and sustainability of small businesses.

“Digital financial services are essential for small business growth. Through MTN MoMo, retailers can receive payments, make transactions, reduce cash-handling risks and improve visibility in their business operations,” Isabirye said.

“We are proud to support the GRIT programme because it gives retailers not only the knowledge to grow, but also the tools to participate more confidently in Uganda’s digital economy.”

According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, small and medium-sized enterprises account for about 90 percent of Uganda’s business sector, employ more than 2.5 million people and contribute approximately 20 percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product.

For many retailers, the training provides practical skills that can immediately be applied in their day-to-day operations, including managing cash flow, tracking inventory, improving customer service, separating business and personal finances, and planning for future expansion.

One retailer who participated in an earlier GRIT training programme said the initiative transformed how they manage their business.

NWSC’s Dr. Eng. Silver Mugisha Praised by Moses Bwengye for leading with integrity - Daily Post Uganda 04/06/2026

Dr. Eng. Silver Mugisha’s story reads like a hero’s tale written through service. He carried the values of his homeland hard work, humility, and respect for community into the National Water and Sewerage Corporation. There, leadership became about restoring dignity, one tap at a time. Water flowed because you led with integrity, and that integrity brought the quiet strength of Bushenyi into national service.

Under his leadership, NWSC expanded its reach to more towns, villages, and rural communities. Millions of Ugandans who once walked long distances for water now depend on safe, piped supply. Because water touches daily life, improvements in reliability, pressure and customer care are felt immediately in homes, schools and health centres. He built a culture of presence, choosing to be in the field with staff and citizens instead of behind a desk. That approach turned a government agency into an institution people could trust.

Integrity also meant building self-reliance. Revenues grew, the asset base expanded, and long-term plans were anchored on the corporation’s own resources rather than dependence. That discipline came from controlling costs, growing income and cutting waste. Investment in digital tools and stronger customer service made response faster and more transparent. Citizens’ daily experience changed because leadership chose accountability

The results earned recognition at home and abroad. A son of Bushenyi was honoured for transforming NWSC into a model utility that inspires other African countries. His journey proves a simple truth: when public institutions are run with professionalism, innovation and a heart for the people, they deliver results at scale.

For turning water into a promise kept for millions, Dr. Eng. Silver Mugisha deserves our appreciation. From Bushenyi to the nation, water flowed because you led with integrity, and Uganda needs more heroes who will choose that same path.

Chief Magistrate Christine Nantege issued the stern warning during proceedings in which Shukla appeared after a prolonged absence.

Shukla faces charges of obtaining more than Shs220 million through false pretences and conspiracy to defraud. He is jointly charged with his company, manager Judith Ayebare, and accountant Kadikar Dharamdip Anilkumar. The allegations stem from claims that between November 2020 and November 2021, the accused fraudulently obtained approximately USD 27,950 and more than Shs116 million from complainant Shahid Mahmood Alvi of Alvi Auto Village Ltd.

The money was allegedly secured by falsely claiming to lease or rent two plots of land in Banda Industrial Area and Nakawa Industrial Area.
During the day’s session, the court arrested Shukla upon his appearance and detained him for about three hours before proceeding.

The magistrate cancelled previous sureties and ordered fresh ones. Shukla’s wife and son stood as guarantors, assuring the court of his future attendance.

Equity Bank reaffirms support for SACCOs, small businesses - Daily Post Uganda 04/06/2026

Speaking at the Uganda Central Co-operative Financial Services Ltd (UCCFS) Annual General Assembly, held at Silver Springs Hotel Bugolobi on Friday, the Bank highlighted its transformation from a small savings society into a regional banking powerhouse, underscoring its continued focus on empowering SACCOs and small businesses as key drivers of economic growth.

Olivia Mugaba, Equity Bank’s Head of SMEs said “We started as a Society formed by ordinary farmers who could not access traditional banking because they lacked financial history and collateral,” Mugaba said.

She explained that small-scale farmers came together to create a financial system where members could save, borrow, pay school fees, and invest in farming activities through mutual trust and shared responsibility.

“That journey is proof that SACCOs and cooperatives can grow into strong institutions when supported with the right leadership, discipline, and partnerships,” Mugaba added.

Mugaba noted that Equity Bank’s partnership with the cooperative Body is aimed at strengthening financial inclusion at grassroots level by designing products and services tailored to the realities faced by SACCO members.

“If a customer walks into a bank and is turned away because they do not meet standard requirements, then we have not served them. We want to understand people’s challenges first so we can create solutions that work for them,” she said.

Mugaba further revealed that Equity bank has dedicated budgets for free financial literacy and capacity-building programs for SACCOs across the country.

“If your SACCO needs governance training, financial literacy, or leadership support, call us. We will come and train your members at our own cost,” she emphasized.

The Bank also showcased its sustainability agenda through green financing products targeting renewable energy, waste management, and environmentally friendly projects.

“We provide green financing at reduced interest rates because sustainability matters. In some cases, our partners even pay up to 33 percent of the loan value on behalf of the customer,” Mugaba said.

Equity bank’s Segment Head of Micro Business, Bob Paul Lusembo, described SACCOs as the foundation of economic transformation at grassroots level.

The Senior Director for Planning, Performance and Capital Development, Eng. Paddy Twesigye, recently led the Package 2B project team, including Project Manager Eng. Herbert Mujuni, on site inspections and the 16th project progress review meeting to assess ongoing works.

According to NWSC, construction activities are progressing well across key project components. So far, 11 kilometres of the planned 68.5-kilometre pipeline network have been laid. Four construction teams are currently deployed along the Kira–Kasangati, Lugoba–Nansana and Kabulengwa–Wakiso pipeline corridors to accelerate implementation.

At the Kabulengwa Booster Station, the roof slab has been successfully cast and is undergoing curing, while works at the Kanyanya Reservoir Site are advancing with the installation of drainage pipes, construction of inlet valve chambers and steel reinforcement works for ground beams.

The project forms a critical component of NWSC’s broader strategy to rehabilitate, restructure, rezone and expand the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area water supply network, with the goal of increasing access to clean and safe water in Wakiso District and surrounding areas.

Four UPDF Senior Officers Apply for Bail in Fuel Theft Case - Daily Post Uganda 31/05/2026

The accused are Brig. Gen. James Barigye Ruheesi, Col. David Ociti Kidega, Maj. Innocent Kikongi Mugumya, and Capt. Kenneth Labwon Kinyera.

They appeared before a three-judge military panel chaired by Brig. Richard Tukacungurwa, facing charges of engaging in personal interests that allegedly endanger operational efficiency, contrary to Section 122(b) of the UPDF Act.

Prosecution alleges that between July 2022 and December 2023, the officers, operating in Kampala and Jinja, diverted about 270,000 litres of automotive gas oil meant for the Uganda Rapid Deployment Capability Centre in Jinja for personal use.

The accused officers all denied the charges and applied for bail. The state prosecution team was led by Captain Gift Mubehamwe, Captain Alex Lasto Mukhwana, and 2nd Lt Regina Nanzala, who were granted until June 29, 2026, to respond to the bail applications. The defence is also expected to file rejoinders on the same date.

Brigadier General Barigye Ruheesi, described as the prime suspect, applied for bail through his lawyers, Major Busagwa Nsubuga and civilian lawyer Ronald Musiime.

The defence argued that the general had been in detention for over a year before being formally produced in court for plea taking. They further told the court that he is over 60 years old, suffers from asthma and diabetes, and is currently unwell both physically and psychologically following the recent death of his mother, whose burial he reportedly missed due to detention.

The lawyers also noted that he has served in the army for more than 40 years and presented substantial sureties, including former Chief of Citizenship and Immigration Control Major General Apollo Kasita Gowa, retired Brigadier Jeff Mukasa, and his brother.

The defence maintained that the charges are not capital in nature, are bailable, and that the accused are first-time offenders.

Colonel Kidega presented his wife, brother, and fellow officer Col. Ocen as sureties, while Major Mugumya was backed by his brother and fellow rank mates. Captain Kinyera also presented his wife and a fellow UPDF captain.

Court heard that all sureties pledged to ensure the accused persons return for trial whenever required

The case comes amid heightened anti-corruption operations within the military. In a post on his X account in April 2025, Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba stated: “I arrested a General who has been stealing fuel for about three years. There are more to follow.”

Investigations indicate that fuel supplies at the Uganda Rapid Deployment Capability Centre were allegedly systematically reduced, raising concerns about operational readiness. The alleged theft is estimated to have cost the state billions of shillings over a three-year period.

NUP Reappoints Joel Ssenyonyi as Leader of Opposition - Daily Post Uganda 28/05/2026

Ssenyonyi, who also serves as the party spokesperson, succeeded Matthias Mpuuga two years ago during a turbulent period marked by corruption allegations involving Parliamentary Commissioners.

Opposition Cabinet List:
Position Name Constituency
Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi Nakawa West
Commissioner of Parliament John Baptist Nambeshe Manjiya County
Chief Whip Paul Mwiru Jinja South East
Deputy Chief Whip Harriet Nakwedde Kayunga Woman MP
Chairperson, Public Accounts Committee Patrick Nsamba Oshabe Kassanda County North
Chairperson, COSASE Nkunyingi Muwada Kyadondo County East
Shadow Finance Minister Geoffrey Ekanya Tororo County
The new leadership team is expected to provide alternative programs to those of the ruling government, focusing on accountability, human rights, and public expenditure.

His leadership had come under renewed pressure last year following the introduction of a controversial private member’s bill seeking to change how the Leader of the Opposition is selected.

The Administration of Parliament (Amendment) Bill, 2024, introduced by Mityana South MP Richard Lumu, proposed stripping political parties of the power to appoint the LoP and instead introducing an election by all opposition MPs.

The Bill also proposed provisions for removal of the LoP on grounds of incompetence or misconduct, parliamentary approval of the Shadow Cabinet, and formal opposition input in the appointment of committee chairpersons.

However, the Bill has since collapsed. On March 12, 2026, Lumu formally withdrew it, acknowledging that it conflicted with established Westminster parliamentary principles that underpin Uganda’s legislative system.

Under the current Administration of Parliament (Amendment) Act, 2006, the Leader of the Opposition is chosen internally by the largest opposition party in Parliament, a system that has remained in place since the restoration of multiparty politics.

Following the opposition’s Central Executive Committee meeting, NUP has now reaffirmed Ssenyonyi’s leadership, and Parliament is expected to formally endorse the decision during this afternoon’s sitting of the House.

Alongside Ssenyonyi’s confirmation, the House will also consider other opposition appointments, including John Baptist Nambeshe (Manjiya County, Bududa District) as Parliamentary Commissioner.

Jinja East MP Paul Mwiru is expected to be approved as Opposition Chief Whip, with Kayunga District Woman MP newcomer Harriet Nakwedde nominated as his deputy.

The opposition leadership has also submitted names for committee assignments pending parliamentary approval.
