AFRICA'S POVERTY LIES IN ITS LEADERS

Africa has all it needs to stand alone as a major world superpower. From a large pool of human resource in the form of a youthful and able population to the various climatic conditions and one of the worlds greatest reserve of minerals, vegetation, waterways and aqua and wild life, Africa has it all. A lot of wealth in many foreign countries both East and West and particularly those that colonised us physically then and those that colonise us economically now, comes from Africa. The world out there is literally feeding off Africa!

Despite having it all, Africans remain among the poorest and least dignified citizens of planet earth such that when you land at European airports, the begging boxes they call donation boxes are distinctively accompanied by a picture of hungry and pathetic looking African children.
However, amidst all this poverty, high prices, economic woes and everything bad about the continent, there is a class of people who are richer than all the citizens - leaders. Just look around the continent and see how our leaders live. They are simply in a class of their own.

In Africa, once you get into leadership and in this case government leadership, your mind as if by default is already set on what personal benefits come with the power you now wield. A red carpet becomes more important for poor people to be shown when leaders land their helicopters in poverty stricken districts than development for those same people. Being important becomes the preoccupation and next thing you hear is they have this and that contract or property through this one and that one. Soonafter, they are dealing with the Chinese, Americans and even the Russians.... You remain the 'us' and they become the 'them'.... we all know the story...

Only when we have leaders who will remain in the circle of the masses shall we see meaningful developments inspired by leaders. It is therefore necessary to reflect on what kind if leaders we as Africans put in place or tolerate because the whole essence of leadership is to identify and be with the flock you shepherd.
Once a leader remains bonded with the masses, they cannot become stooges of any external entity and they cannot steal from the people. And because they are with the masses, they will always be truthful and transparent and they will not sell out. Good governance will be a natural obligation because there is no distinction between them and the masses.
It's time for Africa to begin to the way we are led for the better

I’m hopeful about 2022. This year will undoubtedly have its challenges, just like 2021 did. But we’ve made it this far—and I still believe we can build a brighter future together. Happy New Year!
