This department of the Inquisition is primarily concerned with detecting, studying, containing and destroying xeno-threats, and the Deathwatch is sometimes referred to as its "Chamber of War". Since a single Inquisitor cannot deal with a horde of xenomonsters, the Deathwatch was created specifically to destroy such enemies, and the two organizations work closely together in a continuous war against the vile xenos.

The Deathwatch Warriors are among the most powerful defenders of humanity, without whom thousands of xenos races could have crushed the human race centuries ago.
The last and perhaps most significant of all the differences between the Deathwatch and other Chapters is that their missions are assigned not by the Chapter Master, who is responsible only for his brethren, but by the Inquisitors of the Ordo Xenos.

They resisted the dominance of the mind flayers of the Hraves, rewarding these incomprehensible forms of life with death. In short, they have traveled to the darkest corners of the galaxy, confronted the horrors that lurk there, and come out victorious.

They have already faced every kind of xeno-threat and won. They descended into the dark, nightmarish burrows of the Khruds, and having scouted these vile places, cleansed them.

This does not mean that the order avoids battles with other enemies, just that they prioritize missions against the many and varied xenos races that threaten humanity. Those warriors that are most experienced in the fight against strangers join the ranks of the Deathwatch.

To serve in the Deathwatch is such an honor that many continue to wear its distinctive heraldry on their pauldrons even after returning to their home order.
The second unusual feature of this order is that the Deathwatch is exclusively engaged in the fight against xenos.

Not all Chapters provide their battle-brothers to serve in the Deathwatch, but for those who do, service in it brings great glory to both the individual brother and the Chapter as a whole. The origin of this practice is lost to history, but no doubt many Chapters are bound by fearful oaths to send their most experienced xenofighters as soon as they are needed.

The Deathwatch is an Adeptus Astartes Chapter, but it is different from any other existing Chapter. There are many things that make the Deathwatch stand apart from their brethren - the first of which is that the brothers of the order are not permanent members, they are seconded from other orders for a certain mission or for a certain time.
