Second International Joint iOS and Ruby on Rails Developers Conference and Hackathon #iOSonRailsConf 2014 will be held from 17th to 19th of April in «Porto Mare» Park-Hotel in Alushta, Crimea, Ukraine. The event will focus on integrating the experience in developing mobile applica

tions for iOS and developing web applications with Ruby on Rails. Ruby developers have had a passion for Apple products for a long time. Almost everyone are developing on OS X, using TextMate, Sublime or MacVim editors. Quite a strong community of Apple-lovers was formed among Ruby developers. Craving for writing scripts and server applications precisely on Ruby is also observed among iOS- and Mac-developers. If we talk about server applications and sites, using Ruby almost always leads to using Ruby on Rails framework. Both Ruby and Objective-C scooped their ideas from the elder language SmallTalk, which foundations were laid among others by Kent Beck, also known for his theory in programming methodology (Extreme Programming, Agile). But the programmers communities of these two languages are different: if Objective-C developers live from WWDC to WWDC in anticipation of new features and do not even realize what awaits them in the new versions, the Ruby-community is constantly bubbling and changing due to it’s openness.

«#iOSonRailsConf is about the confluence of those two communities. It’s about creating things the way that we want to. It’s about creating client and server apps with Rails and iOS. And it’s about changing the way we’re developing» – Mattt Thompson, Mobile Lead at Heroku. Attendees saw experts from Canada, Europe, Russia, Ukraine and USA, among whom there were the authors of AFNetworking, AFIncrementalStore, SSKeychain, SSZipArchive and other frameworks. There also were covered CocoaPods, RubyMotion and RubyMine, NUI, KIF and Frank, ReactiveCocoa, helios, SSDataKit, RestKit, Sencha Touch and PhoneGap, PostgreSQL, Passbook, basic principles of User Interface (UI), User Experience (UX) and analytics. A year has passed and many things changed — iOS 7 and Ruby on Rails 4 have been released with their cool new features. This year event will include even more great talks and useful live-coding workshops. Conference will be held in parallel with the Hackathon, which will allow participants in the form of a competition dive deep into the practice and apply newly acquired knowledge to implement their ideas. Teams will be mentored by the speakers themselves. It will be interesting for both iOS-developers knowing little of Ruby and Rails and Ruby-developers looking at mobile development. Speakers, sponsors, press, HR-managers and IT startups investors are also invited. As practice has shown «Porto Mare» Park-Hotel is a perfect venue: situated on a Crimean seaside it has comfortable conference-halls, Wi-Fi and all needed equipment for such kind of events. The surrounding nature will be a pleasant bonus for urbanized geeks with its sea breeze, air filled with aromas, and mild spring sun. The average temperature in April is about +20°C, and by this time of the year everything is green and blooming. Tickets will arrive in February. Вторая объединенная международная конференция и хакатон для разработчиков iOS и Ruby on Rails #iOSonRailsConf 2014 пройдут c 17 по 19 апреля в Парк-отеле «Porto Mare» в Алуште, Крым, Украина. Мероприятие будет посвящено объединению опыта в разработке мобильных приложений под iOS и разработке веб приложений на Ruby on Rails.

Разработчики, пишущие на Ruby, давно питают страсть к продуктам Apple. Практически все разрабатывают в OS X, используя редакторы TextMate, Sublime или MacVim. Сформировалось достаточно мощное сообщество из Ruby–разработчиков, любителей Apple. Среди iOS– и Mac–разработчиков также наблюдается тяга к написанию скриптов и серверных приложений именно на Ruby. Если говорить о серверных приложениях и сайтах, то использование Ruby практически всегда ведет за собой использование фреймворка Ruby on Rails.

И Ruby, и Objective–C черпали свои идеи из более старого языка SmallTalk, основы которого закладывал в том числе и Кент Бек, известный также своей теорией в методологии программирования (экстремальное программирование, Agile). Но сообщества программистов этих двух языков отличаются: если Objective–C разработчики живут от WWDC до WWDC в ожидании новых функций и даже не представляют, что их ждет в новых версиях, то Ruby–сообщество постоянно бурлит и изменяется. Способствует этому конечно открытость Ruby, Rails и всего остального.

«#iOSonRailsConf — о слиянии этих двух сообществ. О создании клиентских и серверных приложений такими, как мы хотим, с Rails и iOS. И об изменении наших способов разработки» – Мэттт Томпсон, глава отдела мобильной разработки компании Heroku.

Первая конференция прошла в 2013-м году. Перед участниками выступили специалисты из Европы, Канады, России, США и Украины, среди которых были авторы фреймворков AFNetworking, AFIncrementalStore, SSKeychain, SSZipArchive и других. Также освещались CocoaPods, RubyMotion и RubyMine, NUI, KIF и Frank, ReactiveCocoa, helios, SSDataKit, RestKit, Sencha Touch и PhoneGap, PostgreSQL, Passbook, основы User Interface (UI), User Experience (UX) и аналитики.

Прошел год и многое изменилось — вышли iOS 7 и Ruby on Rails 4 с новыми потрясающими функциями. В этом году будет еще больше интереснейших докладов и полезных мастер-классов. Параллельно с конференцией пройдет хакатон, который позволит участникам в форме соревнования глубоко погрузиться в практику и применить только что полученные знания для воплощения своих идей. Менторами в командах выступят сами докладчики.

Интересно будет как iOS–разработчикам, немного знающим руби и рельсы, так и Ruby–разработчикам, посматривающим на мобильную разработку. Также к участию приглашаются докладчики, спонсоры, пресса, HR-менеджеры и инвесторы в IT стартапы.

Как показала практика, парк-отель «Porto Mare» является прекрасным местом для встречи: расположенный на Крымском побережье, он обладет комфортными конференц-залами, Wi-Fi и всем необходимым оборудованием для мероприятий подобного рода. Окружающая природа будет приятным бонусом для городских гиков: морской бриз, воздух, наполненный ароматами и теплое весеннее солнце. Средняя температура в апреле около +20°C, в это время года все зеленеет и цветет.

Thanks for everyone who answered our poll about the fate of 2014. The results are as we expected: while 82% planned to attend the event, 62% think it's not the right time now and 52% said it's better to postpone until Autumn. So we have decided to postpone the conference indefinitely. Hopefully it will be able to make it in Autumn. We'll announce new dates when things get a little clear. We're also starting to search a spare venue outside Ukraine and Russia, so if you know one please let us know.
