When you don't have enough to eat yourself, how are you supposed to feed your newborns? The KMT Shirati Hospital in Tansania like many rural hospitals, cannot afford to feed its patients. The patients’ families are expected to feed them, but many are too poor or live too far away. For some patients this means that they won't get any food during their hospital stay. The situation is even more diffi
cult for children and old people, who desperately need nutritious meals for faster recovery. Shirati is as small town, situated in the northwest of Tanzania, close to lake Victoria and the Kenyan border. The Shirati KMT hospital is one of the biggest hospitals in the region with150 beds. The Program:
Since 2008 there is a hospital food program in place, founded by the American NGO Reach Shirati. However, due to a lack of funding, so far only half of the patients receive one warm meal a day, 5 days a week. Due to personal experiences during my clinical internship in 2015 at the Shirati KMT Hospital, where I was confronted with many difficult patient cases and the issue of malnutrition, I decided to support the food project, with the goal to provide EVERY patient with at least one meal a day. Therefore, on my return to Germany, I started a fundraising initiative, the Shirati Food Program, raising funds every month in Germany and the Netherlands and sending a monthly contribution to the Shirati Hospital Food Program. In cooperation with the organization INIGEM e.V. we are working hard in in order to reach this goal. With your support and ideas we will be able to reach this goal.
