Few mountain ranges are as iconic as Il Dolomoti. Taking their name from the dolomite rock that comprises this region of the Alps, the triple summit of Tre Cime di Lavaredo is one of the most iconic alpine vistas and highly sought after by all mountaineers.
The Dolomites are perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of via ferrata ("iron ways" in Italian). During the First World War, Italian and Austrian troops fought each other under and over these mountains, and the ladders and handrails that they used to traverse the landscape quickly and efficiently still remain in many places. They have since become a popular way to dip your toes into the more technical side of the mountains, and can take you to some of the most majestic places to be found anywhere in the Alps or beyond.
Oh, and don't forget - you're in Italy, so the cuisine that awaits you in the rifugio at the end of the day makes everything worth it!
