Why the north side of Mount Kilimanjaro is drier?

The northern slopes receive less rain than the southern and western sides of the mountain.
Main reason:
wind and rain shadow effect
Moist winds usually come from the Indian Ocean in the south and southeast.
When these winds hit Kilimanjaro, they rise and cool, dropping most of their rain on the southern slopes first.
By the time the air crosses the mountain and reaches the north side, it has already lost most of its moisture.
This creates a rain shadow, making the north side much drier.

Many experienced climbers feel uneasy when planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro without local support. Park regulations require certified guides to ensure safety for every climber.
There is a minimum number of days for each route, but you can choose longer itineraries for better acclimatization. Short single-day treks are also available and well organized.
