🌿 SUSTAINABILITY AT MOUNT MERU GAME LODGE
We are passionate about protecting the environment and preserving the natural and cultural heritage of this land we are proud to call home.
Here are some of the ways we’re making a difference:
♻️ Since 2023, we’ve signed up to a recycling programme at Kennedy House International School—recycling glass, tins, plastics, and paper, while donating melted candle wax to a local candlemaker.
💧 Through in-room signage, we encourage our guests to be water-wise.
🍃 In our restaurant, we prioritise refillable and recyclable glass bottles over single-use plastics wherever possible.
🧴 We use biodegradable cleaning and laundry products, and provide eco-friendly in-room guest amenities.
👩🍳 Our team is at the heart of what we do—through ongoing training in hospitality, sustainability and professional development, we empower our staff to grow and share knowledge with our guests.
🌍 We source food locally and support our community by employing staff from nearby areas and offering internships to local tourism students.
🪵 Throughout our ongoing renovations, we prioritise reuse and upcycling, with donations of materials and furnishings to local schools and orphanages.
🐓 Food waste is repurposed—some of it supports staff livestock, for example—and we’re planning a vegetable garden using natural compost from food waste and coffee grounds.
🌳 In the past year, we’ve planted 30 indigenous trees in our Sanctuary Gardens, including the African Tulip (Spathodea campanulata) pictured.
Every small step matters—and we’re committed to continuing this journey. 💚

Did you know that the Grey Crowned Crane is often seen as a symbol of longevity, grace and loyalty (they choose a partner and mate for life)? Thanks to our meandering walkway that takes our guests into and around our Sanctuary Gardens, all landscaped and planted in late 2024 to create an abundant park-like space, it is now possible to see these elegant birds (and many others) up close.

With the original farmhouse having been built in 1939 on what was then a coffee plantation, the rooms pictured were added in 1960 as private accommodation for the resident von Nagy family and their visitors. Today, Mount Meru Game Lodge blends mid-century charm decorated with vintage collectibles and historical photographs to ensure your stay is as comfortable as it is nostalgic.
The majority of our rooms have their own private patio, while some of the patios are shared - no matter the layout, every room has access to an outdoor terrace where you can soak up the beauty of your surroundings. This isn't just a getaway; it’s an invitation to experience the warmth and timeless character of a true local landmark - thoughtfully renovated since 2021 with exciting new developments to come!

Our spacious alfresco restaurant, which you’ll find located under a shady canopy of mature mango trees, just outside our main Lodge building (est. 1959), offers an outdoor dining space that is both peaceful and welcoming, and enveloped by abundant tropical greenery on all sides. The weather at the moment is warm and balmy with gathering clouds and rumbling heavens some afternoons that threaten a refreshing downpour, which we’d welcome given the heat. As each day heads towards dusk, our team gets to work setting up our bonfire, which lights up our alfresco restaurant with a warm and gentle glow. The flickering flames, the cool night air, and the orchestra of animal, bird, and insect sounds combine to create a memorable moment in your Tanzania adventure that will stay with you long after the fire fades.

The decoration of our 25 guest rooms and bathrooms, as well as our facilities, from massage spa to bar and lounge area and more, has not followed a formula or generic ‘one size fits all’ approach. Far from it. From fabric to furniture, wall colours and artistic accents have all been handpicked for their unique attributes and charm. Much of our decor is handmade in Tanzania, with some of it sourced further afield in Africa - such as these handcarved ceremonial Bamileke shields from Cameroon. The journey of searching and sourcing has been a memorable one, with some solid relationships made in the process, as well as rooms we are proud of. We invite you to come and savour the results.

Mount Meru Game Lodge began as a humble farmhouse in the 1930s, at the heart of a coffee farm. It was in the 1950s that Hungarian-born conservationist Andreas von Nagy purchased the plot and set to work creating his home on African soil. Over the years, it became a special meeting place for friends and family from all over the world, and, eventually, a must-visit stop on the hospitality map in northern Tanzania. For decades, it was managed by a series of hospitality companies, but in 2016, the Lodge was placed back into family hands. Since then, renovation and refurbishment have breathed new life into the grounds and amenities, and the arrival of new partners in 2021 heralded yet another fresh start. Amidst all these changes, the Lodge’s signature look and feel has certainly not been lost. Vintage photos, maps, and relics from the past, combined with handmade decor and art from Tanzania and further afield in Africa, combine to create a homely and welcoming space with a big heart. Wherever you go on our property, you will see our passion for supporting local artisans such as furniture makers and tailors (or ‘fundis’ in the local dialect) shining through. Putting it all together has been a labour of love, and we can’t wait for you to experience our special place. Karibuni sana.

Looking back over 2025, we are proud of new developments that have taken place here at . In June of this year we opened our brand-new riverside spa, set in a little-known corner of our property, complete with covered patio surrounded by nature and en-suite shower room. Our spa menu offers a variety of massage treatments from deep-tissue to Swedish massage using aromatherapy oils in a fresh and uplifting setting, all under the auspices of our trained and experienced therapists. The feedback so far has been resoundingly positive.
We take bookings ahead of time, and endeavour to accommodate all last-minute requests. If you’re envisaging sore muscles after a Mount Meru climb, or a tired body after a week on safari, do include a massage treatment as part of your Mount Meru Game stay.

It has been a year since we landscaped our Sanctuary Gardens, and the flowers (including these magenta plumed cockscomb) are out, providing eye-catching pockets of brightness amidst the tropical green. The late November ambience is hot and dry, with gathering grey clouds and rolling thunder some afternoons threatening to turn into a downpour. And still, the cicadas buzz on.
