Here’s an overview of canoeing safari options you can do in Tanzania’s parks — a unique way to combine wildlife viewing with water-based adventure on lakes inside and near protected areas:

🛶 1. Canoeing in Arusha National Park
Where: On Momella Lakes, a series of small shallow alkaline lakes in the park near Arusha.
Experience: Paddle along calm lake edges and watch wildlife — giraffes, buffalo, hippos, bushbuck and abundant water birds — from your canoe.
Duration: Typically 2–2.5 hours.
Best for: Those who want close-up views of animals and birds from the water in a serene setting.
Notes: Requires park entry and canoe activity fees.

🛶 2. Canoeing in Lake Manyara National Park
Where: On Lake Manyara when water levels are high enough to allow canoeing.
Experience: Glide through shallow, safe waters past thousands of flamingos and other water birds, and see giraffes, elephants and buffalo grazing along the shore.
Duration: Around 2–3 hours.
Highlights: Excellent for birdlife sightings (including flamingos), peaceful paddling and dramatic Rift Valley scenery.
Notes: Not always available year-round — depends on water levels and seasonal conditions.

🛶 3. Canoeing on Lake Duluti (near Arusha)
Where: A quiet small crater lake just outside Arusha.
Experience: A shorter 1.5-hour canoe trip where you can see forest-edge birdlife like giant kingfishers, fish eagles and other species.
Best for: Birdwatchers or those wanting a peaceful waterscape experience without the big safari crowds.
Notes: Not inside a national park, but often offered by safari operators as an add-on.

🐾 What to Expect on a Canoeing Safari
Wildlife viewing from a different angle — paddling quietly allows you to approach animals and birds without the disturbance of vehicle noise.

Guided experiences — all canoe safaris are led by trained guides familiar with local ecology and safety.

Suitable for many travellers — these outings are generally low-intensity and family-friendly, with basic instruction provided before departure.

Best times: Canoeing is popular year-round, but June–October offers stable water levels and excellent wildlife viewing.

🧭 Tips for Planning
Include in your safari itinerary — canoeing is often a half-day add-on and can complement game drives in the northern parks circuit (Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority)

Book with licensed operators Tuko Adventures — we’ll arrange park permits, transfers, guides and safety equipment.

One of the most revered strongholds of animals on earth and the largest game reserve in Africa.
Nyerere National Park
Nyerere (formerly Selous) is all about getting right out there into the wilderness and feel Africa getting under your skin.

Wildlife connoisseurs adore Nyerere, and for us, for that reason, it’s familiar territory. It’s a huge area way down in southern Tanzania. The Rufiji River is its life-force: swirling, tawny waters – full of hippopotamus and crocodile - cleave the eleven million acres of bush, woodland, hills and grasslands. In this huge, fascinatingly diverse ecosystem, we revel in the anticipation of discovery as it unfolds before us.

It’s hard to explain, but it's as if we've squeezed through a creaking, old gate to gain the freedom of Nature’s secret garden. To be in Nyerere is to suddenly walk onto a hidden riverbank, and see the flash of a leopard leaping the rocks on the opposite bank, is to watch from a treetop hide as a herd of elephant silently crosses a waterhole, is to come upon a pack of African hunting dogs alone on their kill as you round a curve in the river.
