The White-backed Vulture (Gyps africanus) is a large Old World vulture found in sub-Saharan Africa. It’s one of the most widespread and recognizable vultures on the continent, playing a crucial role in the ecosystem by cleaning up carcasses and preventing the spread of disease.
Key Facts:
• Size: Wingspan of about 2.2 to 2.6 meters (7.2 to 8.5 feet), and weighs between 4 and 7 kg.
• Appearance: Brown body with a contrasting white back and rump; the neck is long and bare, often appearing pinkish or gray.
• Habitat: Savannas, open woodlands, and areas near carcasses. Commonly seen soaring in the sky or gathering in groups at kill sites.
• Diet: Strictly scavengers, feeding mostly on the soft tissues of dead animals.
• Breeding: Nests in colonies on tall trees or cliffs. Typically lays one egg per breeding season.
• Status: Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to poisoning, habitat loss, and declining food availability.
