Football’s rule-makers have admitted that Switzerland’s Breel Embolo should not have been sent off during their World Cup quarterfinal against Argentina.
With the game tied 1-1 in the 72nd minute, Embolo got a second yellow card after a video review (VAR) claimed he faked a foul. That red card completely turned the tide, and Argentina went on to win 3-1 in extra time.
The decision sparked widespread controversy, with some fans claiming Argentina received favourable treatment during the tournament.
The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has now acknowledged that VAR was used incorrectly in the incident and says it is reviewing the rules to help prevent similar mistakes in future competitions.
