Friendly societies arose in the 17th and 18th centuries. They are mutual-aid organization formed voluntarily by individuals to protect members against debts incurred through illness, death, or old age. They were formed before the formal banking era soon after emancipation and still function in their communities in Trinidad and Tobago.

Minister of Youth Development and National Service, the Honourable Foster Cummings, along with Permanent Secretary Farook Hosein, today met with the Registrar of Friendly Societies – Mr. Farai Hove Masaisai, Ms. Chandra Mohammed – Friendly Society Officer II and Mrs. Monic Lennard-Francis - Legal Officer.

Minister Cummings, during the meeting, noted that the Friendly Societies is a timeless movement which should be promoted to the youth population, and should play a greater role in our country’s national development.

In addition, he assured the Friendly Society Division, that the MYDNS will continue to provide the necessary support, to ensure the growth of the Friendly Societies movement of Trinidad and Tobago.
