We have hosted Barış Tanyıldızı, founder of Open Now Studio and Monday Kick, during our FFD 102 Design Studio II course last week. Mr. Tanyıldızı has shared his experiences on how he founded his studio and launched his own brand after he left his everyday job during Covid-19 pandemic. His story not only gave insights about his approach to design discipline itself but also about how he managed to turn his passion into a business model.

We would like to thank Instructor Dr. Seda Özen Tanyıldızı, Assoc. Prof. Dr. R. Özgül Kılınçarslan and Instructor Dr. Ayşegül Acar for their contributions in organizing this seminar.

Barış Tanyıldızı is an independent illustrator and the creator of Monday Kick. For approximately 16 years, he has been producing work within the fields of fashion, graphic design, and the creative industries. Throughout his career, he has worked with various brands both as a freelancer and as part of OpenNow Studio, focusing on illustration, apparel graphics, brand identity, and visual storytelling. Defining himself more as a storyteller than a designer, Barış develops a visual language at the intersection of art and design—one that is characterized by a strong analog sensibility, a focus on characters, and global references. Monday Kick, as an independent and experimental reflection of this approach, serves as a creative space where he freely expresses his personal visual world and narrative language.

Last week, we had the privilege of hosting Ebru Yetişkin — a pioneering media art curator, art critic, and researcher whose work sits at the crossroads of science, technology, politics, and art.

Her seminar took us on a journey through futurisms — from the radical provocations of the early avant-garde to today’s technofuturist practices — exploring how design and artistic methods don’t just reflect the future, but actively script it. How do aesthetic strategies and creative speculation shape the collective imaginaries we end up living in?

One of the highlights was a thought-provoking exchange with our colleague Daniele Savasta, who raised a powerful question after Yetişkin’s discussion of Afrofuturism: “Is there an Anatolian Futurism — or could there be?” A question that is still lingering in our minds.

It was a wonderful gathering of students and faculty, and a reminder of why these conversations matter. Many thanks to Ebru Yetişkin for her generosity, her depth of thought, and for the ideas she left behind.
