🖨️ FDM vs SLA vs SLS: Which 3D Printing Technology Fits Your Application?

Not all 3D printing technologies are designed for the same purpose. The right choice depends on factors such as mechanical performance, dimensional accuracy, surface finish, material properties, geometry, and production volume.

🔹 FDM – Fused Deposition Modeling
Material is deposited layer by layer through a heated nozzle using thermoplastic filaments such as PLA, ABS, PETG, or Nylon.
⚙️ Key strengths: cost-effective, versatile, functional prototypes, large parts
🎯 Best suited for: functional prototypes, mechanical parts, jigs & fixtures, and low-volume production.

🔹 SLA – Stereolithography
A liquid photopolymer resin is selectively cured layer by layer using a laser or UV light source.
⚙️ Key strengths: high dimensional accuracy, fine details, and excellent surface quality
🎯 Best suited for: detailed prototypes, visual models, small complex components, molds, and dental applications.

🔹 SLS – Selective Laser Sintering
A laser selectively sinters polymer powder, typically PA12 or other Nylon-based materials, layer by layer. Unlike FDM and SLA, no support structures are generally required.
⚙️ Key strengths: complex geometries, strong functional parts, design freedom, and batch production

🔍 Validate your tooling before production with SLA 3D printing!

At InspireTech, we develop pre-mold validation prototypes to verify tooling dimensions and evaluate product assembly before investing in injection molding.

For this project, the customer's final part will be injection molded in polypropylene (PP). To accurately simulate its mechanical behavior during the validation phase, we selected Tough 1500 resin by Formlabs, an engineering SLA resin with mechanical properties close to polypropylene.

This prototype, featuring a snap-fit system, enabled the customer to validate dimensions, fit, assembly, and functionality with confidence before moving to production.
