The adventure continues!
From 8 to 10 December, the second workshop of Empowering Young Voices for the Oceanâ an activity endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade â is taking place, as part of the Winter School :âLe monde invisible du plastiqueâ, organized in collaboration between INSTM and ECT within the Project "MusĂ©e des Eaux".
On the program: beach monitoring and microplastic analysis.
Once again, students are diving into hands-on activities that reveal the hidden challenges of plastic pollution â an important step in inspiring the next generation of ocean-minded youth.

RIP Pr Thierry Chopin
In Memoriam: Dr. Thierry B.R. Chopin (1959â2024)
Dr. Thierry B.R. Chopin, a distinguished Canadian phycologist and advocate for sustainable aquaculture, passed away on July 18, 2024. His legacy reverberates through the scientific community, where he made significant contributions to integrated multitrophic aquaculture (IMTA).
Born in 1947, Dr. Chopin dedicated his life to understanding marine ecosystems and promoting environmentally responsible practices. His research focused on IMTA, a holistic approach that combines various speciesâsuch as seaweed, mussels, and fishâin a synergistic system. By harnessing the natural interactions between these organisms, IMTA aims to minimize environmental impact while maximizing productivity.
Throughout his career, Dr. Chopin championed the cultivation of seaweed alongside finfish and shellfish. He believed that IMTA could revolutionize aquaculture by creating balanced ecosystems that mimic nature. His work extended beyond academia; he collaborated with industry partners, policymakers, and coastal communities to implement sustainable practices.
Dr. Chopinâs impact extended globally. He advised governments, authored influential publications, and mentored countless students. His passion for the oceans was contagious, inspiring others to safeguard our marine resources.
As we bid farewell to this visionary scientist, let us honour his memory by continuing the pursuit of sustainable aquaculture. Dr. Thierry B.R. Chopin leaves behind a legacy of innovation, compassion, and dedication to our planetâs blue heart.
