Ever wondered what’s hidden beneath the grounds of Dili? 🇹🇱⛰️

When we drill for water or construction in our capital, we aren’t just hitting rocks—we are traveling back in time. Because Timor-Leste was pushed up from the deep ocean floor by massive tectonic forces, our ground is a "frozen snapshot" of a prehistoric ocean.

If you look closely at the limestone (the Baucau Formation) coming out of a borehole, you might find these incredible treasures:

1. The Architects: Brain & Finger Corals 🧠🪸

The rounded stones with maze-like patterns you see in the raised terraces around Dili are often Brain Corals (Goniastrea). You’ll also find Finger Corals (Acropora) that look like porous grey tubes. These were the "foundations" of Dili millions of years ago!

2. Giant Clams (Tridacna gigas) 🐚

It is common to find massive, thick shell fragments deep underground. Some ancient shells found here are over a meter long! Even after millions of years, the shell material often remains hard, white, and perfectly preserved.

3. Sea Lilies: The "Screws and Bolts" of the Earth ⚙️

These are Timor-Leste’s most famous fossils! They look like tiny stacks of buttons or small metal screws. While they look like plants, Crinoids were actually animals that covered the seafloor like a field of flowers.

4. Ancient Sea Monsters: Ammonites & Belemnites 🦑

If you drill into the much deeper, older layers, you reach the time of the dinosaurs.
=> Ammonites: Beautiful, coiled shells that look like a flat snail.
=> Belemnites: Smooth, bullet-shaped stones that were once the internal "bones" of ancient squid-like creatures.
Timor-Leste is world-famous among geologists for the incredible quality of these fossils!

5. The Timekeepers: Micro-fossils 🔬

Even the "mud" from a drill site tells a story. Geologists look for Foraminifera—tiny, single-celled organisms. They are too small to see with your eyes, but they act like a biological "calendar." By identifying these tiny shells, experts can tell exactly how many millions of years old a layer of rock is.
The next time you see a drilling rig for underground water (fura bee) in Dili, remember: They aren't just looking for water; they are breaking through the floor of an ancient world! 🌊🇹🇱

Have you ever found a "stone screw" or a strange shell while digging in your garden? Tell your story in the comments! 👇😊🙂
