🔤 -ED Pronunciation Rules (Simple)
1️⃣ -ed = /t/
👉 Use /t/ when the verb ends in a voiceless sound
❌ NOT /t/ or /d/
🧊 Voiceless sounds:
/p, k, f, s, ʃ, tʃ/
📘 Examples:
• help → helped → /helpt/
• look → looked → /lʊkt/
• laugh → laughed → /læft/
• wash → washed → /wɒʃt/
• watch → watched → /wɒtʃt/
2️⃣ -ed = /d/
👉 Use /d/ when the verb ends in a voiced sound
(except /d/ or /t/)
🔊 Voiced sounds:
/b, g, v, z, m, n, l, r, ð/ + vowels
📘 Examples:
• play → played → /pleɪd/
• clean → cleaned → /kliːnd/
• call → called → /kɔːld/
• love → loved → /lʌvd/
• rain → rained → /reɪnd/
⚠️ Important Exception
3️⃣ -ed = /ɪd/
👉 If the verb ends in /t/ or /d/

A period of time (an amount of time, not exact)
🔹 Part of speech
• Determiner + noun
🔹 Use
• When you talk about how long something takes
• Often used with for, need, take
🔹 Examples
• I need some time to finish my homework.
• She spent some time reading books.
• It will take some time to learn English well.
✅ Tip: Ask yourself → How much time?
If yes → some time
2️⃣ Sometime (one word)
🔹 Meaning
At an unknown or unspecified time (one time in the future or past)
🔹 Part of speech
• Adverb
🔹 Use
• When the exact time is not important or not known
🔹 Examples
• I will call you sometime tomorrow.
• Let’s meet sometime next week.
• She lived in Japan sometime in the past.
✅ Tip: Ask yourself → When? (but not exact)

3️⃣ Sometimes (one word, plural)

Occasionally / not always

• Adverb of frequency
🔹 Use
• To talk about things that happen again and again, but not often
🔹 Examples

• We sometimes play football after school.

(Subject–Verb Agreement)
1️⃣ Rule
• The verb must agree with the subject in number.
• Number = singular or plural
2️⃣ Singular Subjects → Verb + s / es
Subjects:
• He
• She
• It
• A name (Anna, John)
• One thing / one person
Examples:
• He likes pizza.
• She eats an apple.
• The dog runs fast.
• Anna plays soccer.
3️⃣ Plural Subjects → Base Verb (NO -s)
Subjects:
• I
• You
• We
• They
• Two or more things / people
Examples:
• They like pizza.
• We eat apples.
• The dogs run fast.
• The kids play soccer.
4️⃣ Important Note ⚠️
• “I” is singular BUT uses base verb
• ✅ I eat an apple.
• ❌ I eats an apple.
5️⃣ Common Mistakes ❌
• ❌ He like pizza.
• ✅ He likes pizza.
• ❌ They plays soccer.
• ✅ They play soccer.
