Can wastewater from poultry processing be treated in a way that not only protects waterways but also recovers valuable resources?

Phaisit Buaban, a Master’s student in Environmental Engineering and Management, is exploring how purple phototrophic bacteria (PPB), light-powered microorganisms, can treat poultry processing wastewater while generating nutrient-rich biomass with potential use in aquaculture feed.

Supervised by Dr. Anish Ghimire, the research demonstrates how wastewater treatment can move beyond pollution control toward resource recovery and circular economy solutions.

Key findings showed up to ~90% reduction in organic pollutants, while producing protein-rich biomass with promising future applications for sustainable aquaculture and industrial wastewater management.

AIT, through the AIT Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering (FCEE), joined the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment’s Pollution Control Department (PCD), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and COBSEA in launching the “Thai NuRA” project to advance sustainable coastal and marine pollution management in Thailand.

Through innovative wastewater treatment technologies, decentralized sanitation systems, and nature-based solutions, the project aims to reduce nutrient pollution and improve coastal water quality across key sectors, including tourism, agriculture, and fishing ports.

AIT will contribute technical expertise and pilot implementation under Component 3 of the initiative, supporting healthier coastal ecosystems and stronger local capacity for sustainable development.

At the 9th Asia Conference on Earthquake Engineering (ACEE), held in Kathmandu, Nepal, from 4-6 May 2026, the Structural Engineering program at the Asian Institute of Technology highlighted its contributions to advancing earthquake engineering, seismic resilience, and post-earthquake research across Asia.

AIT researchers and faculty contributed to key discussions on engineering innovation, safer communities, and disaster resilience through the following presentations:

➡️ Prof. Pennung Warnitchai
“The Impact of the M7.7 Mandalay Earthquake on High-Rise Buildings in Bangkok”

➡️ Dr. Naveed Anwar
“Performance-Based Design in the Age of AI: From Research to Engineering Practice”

➡️ Dr. Chaitanya Krishna Gadagamma
“Assessment to Action: Advancing Seismic Safety of Low-Rise Buildings in Developing Countries”

Representing the next generation of researchers, senior PhD student Mr. Binay Karna presented:
“Reading Failure in Rubble: Observational Insights from Over 10,000 Post-Earthquake Damage Images of the 2025 Myanmar Earthquake”

The breadth of topics presented- from AI-integrated structural design to regional earthquake reconnaissance and resilience of vulnerable infrastructure- reflects how AIT’s Structural Engineering program continues to connect cutting-edge research with real-world impact across the region.

The conference was supported by CSI Bangkok as a title sponsor.

🌾 As climate change intensifies across Asia, building resilient and sustainable food systems has never been more important. Research at the Asian Institute of Technology highlights how climate risk management strategies can help strengthen rice farming communities in Thailand.

Pushpalata Neupane, a master’s student at the Faculty of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources - FFANR, AIT , explored how smallholder rice farmers in Ratchaburi Province are adapting to climate-related challenges such as droughts, floods, and irregular rainfall. Conducted under the supervision of Dr. Muhammad Yaseen, the study provides valuable evidence on how climate-smart practices can improve farm productivity, profitability, and resilience.
