A wild week and a humbling experience (long post)

I took a fight which I didn't need to accept against a huge name of the sport in the upper weight class on a few days notice. Being a fan of my opponent prior, I've joked about fighting him in the past. Although it was initially a joke, there is massive truth about wanting it to happen and on Saturday I got what I wanted.

I knew the risk and disadvantages I was taking but I saw this as a chance to shock the martial arts world and steal his thunder. I backed myself and felt good about it. Feeling focused and fit after leaving no stone left unturned this time around when prepping for my original opponent. Creating this false sense of confidence for myself that I can do this.

It was like the ultimate lotto ticket for me… but a reality check is what was in-store. I felt ok in the fight and was searching for an opening but I was a few steps behind a hungry opponent, receiving a flush head kick in the 3rd round followed by a flurry of knees and punches that knocked me out. A humbling experience.

He was bigger, stronger, more experienced, more skillful and definitely more deserving (when comparing accolades, opponents faced and fight activity). I also got to really understand why there are champions and weight classes. That's two fights/losses I've had moving up in weight against the champions in that division across Muay Thai and Kickboxing so where you at Mighty Mouse I'm coming for ya in MMA! Hahah jokes (although you should know by now I wouldnt say no to that experience at all, nor a rematch with the other two I've already lost to…😅🤦)

I could have not accepted the fight, and fought my original opponent in my weight class. Instead I took a path less travelled because that's martial arts. Not only does it make for a greater life story, that's also where the big names are, and I quickly learnt what type of fighter I want to be when I step back into my division. Dare to be great or dare to be an idiot? I say both! "No crazy no champion".

I still have the same goal of becoming a 3x sport world champion in my division and this is going to require a hell of a lot more work. Already proving to be a damn hard and brutal journey to get there!! I will continue to try my best in this while I'm still alive, healthy, hungry and able.

I am super blessed to be able to do this and my partner, family, mates, coaches and the people around me are there to remind me that even in failure I'm always 'winning', by having them in my life who support me for anything (the real ones in my ecosystem!).

The fight game is just a crazy cool chapter that is making me feel alive to the fullest at this moment in time and I know it won't be around forever so of course I'll keep on going.

Don't know if I'm going a little deep and meaningful on this but speaking from the heart… via facebook go figure 🤣
