A confirmed Nipah virus outbreak has been reported in West Bengal, India, with five cases identified as of late January 2026. Health authorities have implemented quarantine, contact tracing, and enhanced surveillance to contain further spread.

Nipah virus (NiV) is a highly pathogenic zoonotic virus with a high fatality rate (40–75%) and the potential for human-to-human transmission.
