Flowers of the Philippines | The Illustrated Collection | Gentry Press 01/06/2026

Flowers of the Philippines presents the nation's botanical heritage not simply as a collection of species, but as a living inheritance worthy of study, protection, and wonder.

Through science and illustration, Dr. Domingo A. Madulid and Gizzele Delos Santos-Eustaquio do not seek merely to document. They attend with care. One through decades of botanical research, the other through an artist's eye shaped by years of observing life beneath a microscope.

What emerges is not a catalogue, but an offering. Where observation deepens into understanding. Where precision becomes beauty. Where knowledge becomes stewardship.

The Philippine Lady’s Slipper Orchid is considered one of the rarest and most striking native orchids in the country. Its long twisting petals, striped sepals, and slipper shaped golden pouch make it appear almost otherworldly. Found growing on limestone hills and coastal forests from Luzon to Mindanao, this remarkable species is now threatened in the wild.

Featured in Flowers of the Philippines, this illustration forms part of our continuing celebration of Philippine botanical heritage through art and storytelling.

A few months ago, the Gentry Press Foundation () had the privilege of exhibiting the original botanical paintings of Gizzele Delos Santos-Eustaquio from the book Flowers of the Philippines: A Selection of Botanical Illustrations in support of our scholars.

We are currently working on something new surrounding a small selection of the remaining original works from the collection.

More details soon.

There was a time when almost every childhood in the Philippines had an ipil-ipil tree somewhere in the background. Beside schools, empty lots, basketball courts, and long walks home beneath the sun.

Today, many of those memories have disappeared beneath our concrete jungles. Perhaps that is why the response to Flowers of the Philippines has overwhelmed us at Gentry Press. It reminds people not just of flowers and trees, but of a Philippines they still carry quietly within them. 💚

PART II: The Investigation That Had to Be Exact

Hope alone could not suffice. Certainty was required.

In this second part, Mr. Vecin recounts the careful process undertaken to determine whether the image before them was indeed the original long mourned by the faithful. Every feature was examined. Every mark was studied with patience and restraint.

Recognition came not from emotion, but from evidence. What emerged was not assumption, but confirmation.

The moment demanded clarity. Devotion demanded truth.

PART I: The Call That Changed Everything

In 1981, the image of Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia was taken from her shrine. The loss created a silence that settled deeply over a people whose devotion had endured for centuries.

Years later, Mr. Francisco “Quico” Vecin received an unexpected call. He was asked, without preamble, whether he wished to purchase the stolen image.

The question carried weight far beyond commerce. It was a moment suspended between disbelief and responsibility. In this first conversation, Mr. Vecin recalls the gravity of that encounter and the quiet resolve that began to take shape within him.

We are pleased to announce that Gurdwaras: Abodes of the Guru is now available across North America.

The book is available in leading bookstores throughout the United States and Canada, as well as via our exclusive distribution partner Simon & Schuster.

Gurdwaras: Abodes of the Guru presents the Gurdwara not as a place, but as a way of being shaped by prayer, service, and discipline.

Through word and illustration, Roopinder Singh and Allan Quesada do not explain. They attend. What emerges is an offering, where craft deepens into devotion.

Sat Sri Akal!

After taking the time it asked for, Gurdwaras: Abodes of the Guru has finally reached India.

It now rests in bookstores across the country. Not as something to move through quickly, but as something that asks you to slow down the moment you open it. What Roopinder brings is not written from a distance. It comes from within a living faith. What Allan Jay offers is not there to decorate, but to hold, quietly, what cannot always be said.

So yes, it has gone home.

We often think about the moment it reaches you. The first time it rests in your hands. The first page you turn without urgency. We hope it meets you gently. That it asks nothing of you except your presence. That, even for a little while, it frees you from the need to rush.

If it makes you pause, it has begun.
If it makes you stay, it has done enough.
If it makes you forget your phone exists, even briefly, we will consider that a rare grace.

“Bani Guru, Guru Hai Bani, Vich Bani Amrit Saare.”
(The Word is the Guru, and the Guru is the Word; within it flows the nectar of all life.)
— Sri Guru Granth Sahib (Ang 982)

The book is now available across all major retailers. We encourage you to visit your local bookshop. Go see it. Spend a moment with it before you take it home. Alternatively, you can order it online.

For readers and bookstores across India, copies are available through Simon & Schuster IN.

Take your time with it. Let it meet you where you are.

Some books are finished.

This one stays.
