Introducing the artist of MATDOT Art Center’s upcoming exhibition: Adisak Somkong

His works have always expressed his inner-self gleaned from various points in his life, and they continue to do so. Through his artwork, he hopes to share his thoughts with others and engage in dialogues with them.

In his new body of work created at MATDOT, he employs photography as more than a tool for preserving memories; instead, it becomes a space for exploring the complex relationship between time, perception, and human existence. His practice often begins with ordinary, everyday encounters before gradually unfolding the philosophical questions hidden beneath them.

Through photographs, fragments of text, and traces of time reassembled in the present, this exhibition invites viewers to reflect on how memories are formed, recalled, and transformed, and to reconsider the nature of our own existence within the passage of time.

Introducing the artist of MATDOT Art Center’s upcoming exhibition: Tim Portlock.

Last year, Tim joined us for an artist residency at MATDOT Art Center, where he witnessed the rapid transformation taking place around the neighborhood. One site that particularly captured his attention was Lan Luang Intersection, currently undergoing excavation and demolition as part of the construction of Bangkok’s new underground transit system.

For Tim, urban development is never simply a story of progress. Growth often comes at the cost of something else disappearing. These transitional landscapes have long been central to his practice. His work explores the complex relationships between urban expansion, economic systems, social structures, and the environments shaped by human intervention.

As cities evolve, they generate consequences that ripple across multiple dimensions of life. Through his work, Tim invites viewers to reconsider the narratives of growth and success embedded within the built environment, and to reflect on what is gained, lost, remembered, or erased in the process.

รูปแบบการติดตั้งนิทรรศการในคร้ังนี้ เราออกแบบให้ระดับของชิ้นงานอยู่ต่ำกว่าเส้นระดับสายตาทั่วไป เพื่อให้ผู้ชมได้ก้มหัวลงมอง ย่อตัวลงสังเกต เป็นการแสดงความเคารพและให้เกียรติแก่เพศที่สามที่อยู่ในสังคมโลก แม้สิทธิบางเรื่องจะยังไม่เท่าเทียมกัน แต่ไม่ว่าใครก็มีความเป็นมนุษย์ที่สมควรได้รับความเคารพเท่ากัน

ตลอดประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะ ภาพเหมือนและภาพเปลือยทำหน้าที่บันทึกร่างกายมนุษย์มาอย่างยาวนาน แต่ในขณะเดียวกัน ประวัติศาสตร์ดังกล่าวก็เป็นพื้นที่ที่คัดเลือกว่าร่างกายใดควรถูกมองเห็น และร่างกายใดควรถูกละเลย

เมื่อภาพแทนของมนุษย์ส่วนใหญ่ถูกสร้างขึ้นบนกรอบความคิดที่แบ่งเพศออกเป็นเพียง “ชาย” หรือ “หญิง” ร่างกายที่อยู่นอกเหนือจากนิยามดังกล่าวจึงแทบไม่เคยได้รับพื้นที่ในขนบของภาพเหมือนและภาพนู้ดกระแสหลัก โดยเฉพาะร่างกายของผู้หญิงข้ามเพศที่มักถูกทำให้เลือนหายจากประวัติศาสตร์การมองเห็น

นิทรรศการ MISS โดย ธวัชชัย สมคง จึงไม่ได้เป็นเพียงการวาดภาพผู้หญิงข้ามเพศ หากแต่เป็นการตั้งคำถามต่อวิธีที่ศิลปะและสังคมใช้มองร่างกายมนุษย์มาโดยตลอด ว่ารูปแบบการมองเห็นแบบเดิมยังเพียงพออยู่หรือไม่ในโลกที่ความเข้าใจเรื่องเพศได้ขยายกว้างเกินกว่ากรอบทวิลักษณ์

ขณะเดียวกัน ผลงานชุดนี้ยังทำหน้าที่เป็นทั้งการบันทึก การทำให้มองเห็น และการคืนพื้นที่ทางสายตาให้แก่ร่างกายที่เคยถูกผลักออกจากพื้นที่ตัวแทนของความงามและความเป็นมนุษย์ในประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะ

เมื่อผู้ที่เคยถูกมองข้ามได้ปรากฏตัวขึ้นในฐานะประธานของภาพ คำถามสำคัญจึงอาจไม่ใช่เพียงว่า “เรามองเห็นใคร” แต่คือ “เหตุใดบางคนจึงไม่เคยได้รับการมองเห็นมาตั้งแต่แรก”

Over the past few months, we have had the pleasure of welcoming Australian artist Stephen Eastaugh as an artist-in-residence at MATDOT Art Center.

Known for a practice shaped by decades of travel across continents and some of the world’s most remote environments, Stephen arrived in Bangkok carrying a lifetime of experiences. Yet, as with every residency, it is often the encounters within a particular place that become part of the journey.

This short video offers a glimpse into his time at MATDOT—from daily studio life and conversations with visitors to the moments of discovery that unfolded throughout his stay. More than a record of events, it reflects the exchanges, friendships, and shared curiosity that make artist residencies meaningful.

We are grateful to Stephen for his generosity, stories, and presence, and for becoming part of the MATDOT community.

Thank you for the journey, Stephen. We look forward to seeing where your travels lead next.

นี่ไม่ใช่คำถามเกี่ยวกับคนข้ามเพศเท่านั้น แต่เป็นคำถามเชิงปรัชญาและการเมืองว่า ความเป็นผู้หญิงเกิดจากร่างกายหรือไม่? เกิดจากจิตสำนึกหรือไม่? เกิดจากกฎหมายหรือไม่? หรือเกิดจากการยอมรับของสังคม?

ดังนั้นนิทรรศการไม่ได้เพียงเสนอ "ภาพผู้หญิงข้ามเพศ" แต่กำลังท้าทายอำนาจของสังคมในการเป็นผู้ตัดสินว่าใครคือหญิงหรือใครคือชาย
