🚨 BIG WEEK IN PARLIAMENT:

🚨 President Kiir approves new vehicles for MPs — V6s for leadership, Toyotas for the rest — via a car-loan deal, right as Parliament finalizes big changes to the Elections Act.

Key updates: Assembly grows to 270 seats, President stays in power through the Dec 2026 election period until a new one is sworn in, and elections are now separated from the constitution/census process.
New Cars for MPs, New Rules for Elections

President Salva Kiir has given the green light for lawmakers to receive new vehicles — and it's landing right as Parliament wraps up major changes to South Sudan's election law.

Parliamentary spokesperson Oliver Mori Benjamin confirmed the President had already approved the vehicle purchases, and the Ministry of Finance has now issued the non-objection certificate needed to move forward.

Who gets what?
🔹 Parliamentary leaders & committee chairs → V6 vehicles
🔹 Other MPs → Five-door Toyotas

The vehicles will come through a car-loan arrangement — though Mori noted the President could ultimately decide whether they count as part of lawmakers' entitlements or remain a loan MPs pay back, especially with elections on the horizon.

The bigger story: This comes as Parliament finalizes amendments to the National Elections Act, 2012 — passed Monday and signed into law by President Kiir the same day. Key changes include:

✅ National Legislative Assembly expanded to 270 members
✅ New rules for the December 2026 general elections
✅ The sitting President stays in office with full powers through the election period, until a newly elected President takes over
✅ Elections are now legally separated from completing the permanent constitution and the national census

South Sudan's Parliament is currently operating under transitional arrangements from the 2018 peace deal — and this law is a major piece of the legal groundwork for the 2026 polls.

QUOTE: “We are getting a lot of pressure at Traffic Police Headquarters. When a soldier commits an offense, his people would come and claim that this is their soldier and threaten us that if we don’t release him, they will take action and have us transferred. This is a sovereign nation, and you shouldn't threaten or terrorize a system working in the interest of the citizens. I am warning those who always interfere with the work of traffic police officers, that we will arrest them and hold them accountable for interfering in our work.” — Lt. Gen. Kon John Akot, Assistant Inspector General of Police for Traffic

QUOTE OF THE DAY:
“The level of corruption is now known by God, time has come when a citizen must be given his right. The money is being collected in the market, at airport, at the border, from petroleum, from gold, and from timber, no one knows where the money is going, teachers, doctors, and nurses are not paid and people are saying we have a government. We church leaders, we are holding the holy cross of this country, I would like to tell you that God will not allow innocent citizens to continue suffering like this.” The Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Juba, Santo Loku Pio
