The Special Court panel has ordered NSS to stop alleged forced stripping of detainees during searches, describing the acts as dehumanizing and unconstitutional.

The three-judge panel made the ruling in response to a February 2 petition by defence lawyers who accused security operatives of humiliating treatment, arbitrary searches, and seizure of personal items.

JUBA - A forensic expert has told a special court in Juba that he was unable to access mobile phones and tablets belonging to Dr Riek Machar because the passwords and a related computer were not provided.

Testifying on Monday in the trial of Dr Machar and seven other SPLA-IO co-accused, forensic analyst Ratlhogo Peter Calvin Rafhadi said the absence of passwords made it impossible to extract any data relevant to the case.

Rafhadi told the court that, without the passwords, he did not open the sealed evidence bag containing Dr Machar’s devices. He added that other forensic experts had advised him there were no investigative tools available locally to bypass device passwords, unless the items were sent to an overseas headquarters to be accessed by the original equipment manufacturer.

He said the devices remain intact and securely kept in a sealed evidence bag, and that there was no data from Dr Machar’s phone or tablet to present to the court.

In a separate analysis, Rafhadi told the court that information extracted from the device of accused number four, Gabriel Duop Lam, showed activity he said was consistent with anti-government mobilisation.

He also testified that data recovered from a Samsung phone belonging to accused number one, Pout Kang Chol, indicated what he described as real-time access to battlefield intelligence.

The court adjourned proceedings to Wednesday, when the forensic expert is expected to present further analysis.
