World Humanitarian Day 2026 🌍

Today, SPESS honours the courage, compassion and commitment of humanitarian workers and communities who stand with people affected by crisis.

We reaffirm our commitment to protecting lives, restoring dignity, and supporting sustainable solutions—especially for the most vulnerable.

Healthcare is under attack in various parts of South Sudan.

❗️53 health facilities have been destroyed, damaged or looted since January 2026.

This , we call for protection of health workers, health facilities and the patients they care for.

In the Karamoja cluster, a deepening drought is putting increasing pressure on water and grazing resources, with early warning signs of growing tensions between herding communities across the Kenya–Uganda border.

Rather than waiting for the crisis to peak, DRC has activated an anticipatory action response, using early-warning triggers and community assessments supported by the of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, Embassy of Denmark in Kenya and Somalia.

Over the next month, DRC will:
🔹 Provide unconditional cash assistance to 1,228 households
🔹 Support peacebuilding across 7 cross-border livestock corridors
🔹 Deploy 14 mobile peace monitors to help prevent disputes from escalating

With KES 20.2 million released, the activation aims to protect livelihoods, reduce harmful coping strategies, and help communities manage increasing resource pressures before they escalate into a larger crisis.

This is anticipatory action in practice: act early, reduce impact, preserve peace.

Thousands of people around the world contribute their time and skills to map places affected by disasters. But what happens to those maps once they reach the people responding on the ground?

LAFON COUNTY

EASTERN Equatoria State authorities have confirmed five hunger related deaths in Lafon County as a severe food crisis driven by prolonged drought spreads across several counties.

The deaths were reported following a joint humanitarian assessment, according to Christine Kato, chairperson of the Eastern Equatoria State Relief and Rehabilitation Commission.

Kato warned that the crisis was no longer confined to Lafon and that severe food shortages linked to drought and crop failure had also been reported in Magwi, Torit and Greater Kapoeta.

“After the Lafon assessment, I started receiving reports from different counties - Torit County, Kidepo Valley, Kapoeta, even in Imehejek - concerning hunger,” she said.

According to Kato, families are increasingly selling goats at very low prices in order to buy food, while others are leaving their homes in search of assistance and livelihood opportunities.

She said people had fled to Palotaka, Magwi, Juba, Uganda and the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, and that some villages in the affected areas had become partially deserted.

The state relief commission is coordinating emergency assessments with humanitarian agencies and preparing a report for the national Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management to seek urgent food assistance and nutrition support for malnourished children, Kato said.

South Sudan has repeatedly faced food crises linked to conflict, drought and flooding, with humanitarian agencies warning that climate shocks are increasingly threatening livelihoods in rural communities.
