South Sudan's ministry of health is on alert following reports of the Mpox virus in neighbouring countries.
The ministry has activated its surveillance units at all entry points in response to confirmed cases in Kenya, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Central African Republic.
The head of surveillance in the national ministry of health, Santino Ngong says the border units are screening and monitoring travellers arriving from across the border.
Ngong said there is no confirmed case of Mpox in South Sudan, but he also revealed that samples have been picked from a suspected case in Northern Bahr el-Ghazal.
“The pillars responsible for all surveillance at all points of entry including the ground crossing and Juba International Airport are being activated to monitor the situation at all points of entry," said Ngong, "Should there be any alert, they should report as soon as possible and then the rapid response team should respond immediately."
MPOX, also known as Monkeypox, is a viral illness caused by the monkeypox virus, which is closely related to smallpox.
The virus can spread from person to person through physical contact with infectious person, with contaminated materials or with infected animals.

Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei has triumphed in the men’s 10,000m at the Olympics, setting a new Olympic record!
With the painful moment I endured, here I'm to express my little dissatisfaction about the long awaited results of 2023-2024.
A fortnight passed, I encountered a trending news that the Ministry of General Education and Instructions is demanding 740 million South Sudanese Pounds from the government, but the government didn't clear that amount up to date, is it because they have no money in the central bank? No, it is because the government lacks caution for its citizens, we have a trillion dollars in the Central Bank and that money can never be used to address serious cases like this issue of 2023 results, instead it goes to individuals' pockets. Undoubtedly, I believe that even Hon. Awut Deng Achuil who is the Minister of Education is relaxing in her house because she only minds about tricks of getting from the government rather than minding about the delay of results. There is nowhere in the world where results have ever been kept for more than 7 months, if not South Sudan where the greed for money has blinded everyone, no one sees problems facing the nation, he/she only sees who gives him/her money.
