Great to see the actual photo of Sultan/Educationist Sultan Riak Dor Alueth who is credited with a lot of social reforms during his range as Aliamtooc one Regional Court president. Given his background as a former Headmaster of Malek Primary school in today’s Jonglei state, he championed the affirmative action of compulsory enrolment of children to school in Rumbek East area particularly among Aliamtooc one residents.
My late father Chief Maker Mabor and a good number of uncles were the beneficiaries of Riak’s positive education reforms. Majority of today’s Rumbek East intellectuals in their late 60s or 70s are actually a product of this affirmative or conscription policy of school enrolments. Even those whose parents were not educated in 1950s to early 1960s have also indirectly benefited from Riak’s affirmative action through teachers who were trained through this policy.
Chief Riak also made substantial agricultural reforms in Aliamtoocj areas. He is credited with the introduction of Congo/ Mathelek(corrupted form of Master Lake) groundnut. Story has it that he brought it from his visit to Mangalla area (today’s Terekeka) where the new variety of groundnut was being tested by the British District officer to find out if the soil type could support its growth. Chief Riak told the British researchers that Lakes province soil was similar to Terekeka and that he should also be given samples to try them at Rumbek area. The rest is story but we all know the huge economic benefits that came with the introduction of Congo groundnuts. It is easy to harvest, less labour intensive and ready for harvest much earlier than our traditional ground nut variety (locally called Tongpiny Agaar). He also promoted the cultivation of mango trees at villages and debunked the mythical stories that it was associated with early deaths of its growers.
Although Chief Riak didn’t live long, he achieved a lot within his short period of service. It is an iron law of history that great leaders don’t live long.
However they leave behind mentees. My late father who later served in Athoi regional court and our Pacong first CMA Alfred Manyang Mading were inspired by Chief Riak Dor’s education policies and adopted some of his policies during the dark days of liberation struggle. They vigorously promoted the idea of bush schools even in hard to reach areas by convincing their fellow chiefs and local population that education will turn the tide in the future. May the Almighty God rest the soul of Sultan Riak Dor in perfect peace!
