MONDAY HEADLINES: Humanitarian Crisis, Border Reforms, and Regional Diplomacy👇👇👇
Stay informed with the latest updates from around South Sudan and the region. Here’s what’s making news today, February 9, 2026:
URGENT HUMANITARIAN APPEAL: The UN is warning of a "worsening humanitarian situation" as violence in parts of South Sudan, particularly Jonglei State, continues to escalate. Nearly 10 million people—two-thirds of our population—are now in urgent need of life-saving assistance. Reports indicate that at least 11 healthcare facilities have been attacked in Jonglei since late December, further displacing over 280,000 people in that state alone.
NIMULE BORDER PROBE: In a move to boost the national economy, the government has launched a high-level inter-ministerial probe into trade bottlenecks at the Nimule border. Trade Minister Atong Kuol Manyang led a mission to identify challenges like long clearance times and overlapping mandates, noting that "inefficiencies here directly translate into higher prices" for all South Sudanese.
REGIONAL SOLIDARITY: The African Union has commended South Sudan for its continued hospitality in hosting thousands of Sudanese refugees fleeing the ongoing conflict in Khartoum. AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf praised the spirit of "African solidarity" shown by Juba despite the country's own economic and humanitarian pressures.
50 YEARS OF DEVOTION: The Catholic Diocese of Yei is celebrating a major milestone: 50 years of devotion to St. Bakhita. The celebration concluded with the ordination of over 73 women into the Catholic Action Women’s Group, dedicated to promoting Christian values and community reconciliation.
