Lessons from the Custom Market Fire
The fire that devastated Custom Market on December 1st was more than a tragic incident it was a reminder of the urgent need to strengthen governance, leadership, and public safety systems in South Sudan. While many analyses have tried to explain the event, the deeper issue lies in how our institutions function and how leaders are empowered to act.
For too long, leadership positions have been filled through appointments rather than elections, leaving officials vulnerable to political reshuffling instead of being guided by a clear mandate from the people. This instability often discourages bold decision-making, resulting in ignored warnings, weak enforcement of policies, and inadequate investment in public safety.
At the same time, corruption has eroded the foundations of our state. Every resource diverted away from its rightful purpose means fewer fire trucks, poorly planned markets, and limited emergency services. When the Custom Market burned, the absence of infrastructure and preparedness became painfully clear.
South Sudan must recognize that nations thrive not through force or political maneuvering, but through strong institutions, transparent governance, and investment in essential services. The tragedy should therefore serve as a wake-up call: we need reforms that prioritize accountability, democratic legitimacy, and infrastructure development.
Moving forward, it is vital to empower leaders through fair elections, strengthen oversight mechanisms, and invest in systems that protect communities. By doing so, policies will be implemented consistently, risks will be addressed early, and disasters like the Custom Market fire can be prevented.
This moment should not be remembered only for loss, but as an opportunity to reflect, reform, and rebuild. If lessons are taken seriously, South Sudan can chart a path toward stability, resilience, and a future worthy of its people.

Uniting Marial Wau for a Stronger Voice in South Sudan
My dear brothers and sisters of Marial Wau,
Since the birth of our nation, South Sudan, our community has remained in the shadows. No son or daughter of Marial has been appointed to a high-level government position. This is not because we lack talent, wisdom, or courage. It is because we have allowed disunity to silence our voice.
Today, a new generation of leaders those who believe in the future of Marial Wau have come forward with a powerful idea: to hold a community conference that will bring us together, reconcile our differences, and build a united front. This initiative is not about politics or personal gain. It is about restoring dignity, strengthening our identity, and ensuring that our voices are heard in the halls of power.
Unfortunately, some among us oppose this idea. They may be discouraged by past experiences, or fearful of change. But we must ask ourselves: has division ever brought us progress? Has silence ever earned us recognition? The truth is, only unity can move us forward.
To unite Marial Wau, we must open our hearts to dialogue. We must forgive past wrongs and focus on the future. We must uplift our youth, who carry the dreams of tomorrow. We must speak with one voice, not as scattered individuals, but as one people with a shared history and a common destiny.
This conference is our chance to heal, to plan, and to rise. Let us not miss it. Let us come together—not just for ourselves, but for the generations to come. Let Marial Wau stand tall, united and proud, ready to claim its rightful place in the story of South Sudan.
The time is now. The future is ours to shape. Let us rise as one.
With hope and determination,

1. Competency of the Court: Addressing whether the court handling the case is legally competent to preside over the trial.
2. Jurisdiction of the Court: Clarifying whether the court has the proper legal authority over the matter and the accused.
3. Involvement of Private Lawyers: Responding to objections regarding the participation of private lawyers within the government’s legal team.
4. Immunity of Dr. Riek Machar Teny: Responding to claims concerning any legal immunity Dr. Riek Machar Teny may hold.
Note: Dr. Riek Machar Teny’s legal team has insisted that they do not want a verbal response; they are demanding that the government’s response be submitted in written form.
