Cardinal Gabriel Zubeir Wako

He was born on 27 February 1941 and is a Sudanese Roman Catholic cardinal and prelate who served as the Archbishop of Khartoum from 1979 to 2016. He was created a Cardinal by Pope John Paul II on 21 October 2003, becoming one of the most prominent Catholic leaders in Sudan.

Early Life and Education

Gabriel Zubeir Wako was born on 27 February 1941 in Mboro, Sudan. He was ordained to the priesthood on 21 July 1963 by Bishop Ireneus Wien Dud after completing his ecclesiastical studies.

Episcopal Ministry

In 1974, Wako was appointed Bishop of Wau, receiving episcopal consecration on 6 April 1975. On 30 October 1979, he was appointed Archbishop of Khartoum, and he was formally installed on 10 October 1981. He served as Archbishop for more than 35 years, leading the Catholic Church in Sudan during periods marked by civil war, political instability, and humanitarian crises.

Cardinalate

On 21 October 2003, Pope John Paul II elevated him to the College of Cardinals with the title of Cardinal-Priest of Sant'Atanasio a Via Tiburtina in Rome. He participated as a cardinal elector in the:

2005 papal conclave, which elected Pope Benedict XVI.

2013 papal conclave, which elected Pope Francis.

Ministry and Legacy

Cardinal Wako became widely respected for promoting:

Peace and reconciliation during Sudan's civil conflicts.

Religious coexistence between Christians and Muslims.

Education and healthcare initiatives through the Archdiocese of Khartoum. He helped South Sudanese displaced children across Sudan in schooling through Catholic Comboni schools in various towns of Sudan.

Support for families, children, refugees, and internally displaced persons affected by war. He supported them through healthcare programs and food item distribution.

He consistently defended Christian minorities and advocated for dialogue and national unity.

Assassination Attempt
