Equality in Text, Barriers in Practice? Women and the Rule of Law in Somalia | The Justice and Development Initiative-Somalia 03/03/2026

As we prepare to mark International Women’s Day 2026, JDI reflects on a critical question:

If equality is guaranteed under Somalia’s Constitution, why does a gap still exist between legal promise and lived reality?

Our latest and apposite article, “Equality in Text, Barriers in Practice? Women and the Rule of Law in Somalia,” examines:

â–Ş Constitutional guarantees of equality
▪ Women’s representation in Parliament
â–Ş Protection frameworks and ongoing reforms
â–Ş The institutional challenges shaping implementation

This year, JDI adopted the theme:
“Women, Law and Leadership in Somalia: Rights, Barriers and the Way Forward.”

For us, this is not just a conversation — it is a governance priority.

We invite lawyers, students, policymakers, and citizens to read, reflect, and engage.
