TAAT Supervision Mission Visits AFREC Research Station in Baidoa.
In January 2026, African Agricultural and Forestry Research Center (AFREC) hosted a high-level field visit as part of the Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) Sorghum and Millet Compact Supervision Mission to Somalia. The visit provided an important opportunity to showcase AFREC’s research capacity, ongoing crop adaptation trials, and its contribution to building climate-resilient agricultural systems in Somalia.
The mission delegation included representatives from ICRISAT, Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation of Federal Government of Somalia (MoAI of FGS), TAAT Sorghum and Millet Compact leadership, and private sector partners. During the visit to Baidoa, the team toured AFREC’s experimental research station, which is located in a low-rainfall agro-ecological zone receiving approximately 250 mm of annual rainfall — an area increasingly affected by prolonged droughts.

Advancing Crop Improvement for Food Security in Somalia
=============================
In response to the growing need for crop improvement to strengthen the national food security of Somalia, AFREC is currently conducting field trials of several improved crop varieties across different ecological zones in Somalia.
These new varieties are being evaluated against local ones to assess their climate resilience, environmental adaptability, yield performance, resistance to pests and diseases, and maturity period.
Varieties that demonstrate superior performance will be submitted to SARIS and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (FMoAI) for further regional trials and eventual official release, in line with national release protocols.
One standout variety in the trials is Groundnut, which has shown exceptional performance so far.
