The Afristereo Webinar.
We’re talking about African stereotypes, AI models, and why fairness starts with local context.
▪️ We gathered 1,164 stereotypes from Senegal, Kenya & Nigeria — directly from people on the ground.
Not to reinforce them, but to see how AI systems handle them.
▪️ Early tests show popular language models often amplify these stereotypes, even domain-specific ones like BioGPT or FinBERT.

📅 Today, 15 Aug – 12 PM GMT, we’ll share:
- How the dataset was built
- What we found
- What it means for AI fairness

👉🏾 Join the conversation, explore the data with us, and ask your questions live.

Mental health is deeply personal, and in Africa, it’s also deeply cultural and spiritual.
In many communities, mental health support comes in many forms:
🔘 A conversation with a pastor
🔘 A prayer mat at dawn
🔘 Music, solitude, or staying silent

We’re launching a study to explore how youth are really managing their mental health and how digital tools or AI may fit into that picture.
👉🏾 We need young people (16–25) in 🇬🇭 🇸🇳 🇳🇬 🇰🇪 to share their voice.
📝 The survey takes 10 minutes. It’s anonymous.

🚨Happening now! Our Lead Linguist Derry Moore and our CEO Daryl Collins are at the 2024 Pathways Global Convening in Nairobi by invitation of the Gates Foundation. This event brings together individuals and organizations that are working on developing and implementing the Pathways approach and platform worldwide.

🤝Decodis, Quicksand, and YUX Design are partnering on the Digital Personas project, which leverages the Pathways platform to create personas quantitatively mapped to the Pathways segments in Kenya, Nigeria, and Senegal. These Digital Personas will provide deep, actionable understanding of the factors that enable and constrain women’s ability to use technology as a tool for improved livelihoods, accessible healthcare, and meaningful empowerment.

👩‍💼✨ Our recent collaboration with GSMA and Safaricom focused on enhancing Pochi La Biashara, a mobile wallet designed to help women entrepreneurs manage their business finances effectively in Kenya

Through extensive research, we identified unique challenges faced by women in accessing and utilizing this tool. Our findings revealed that while Pochi has immense potential, women often encounter barriers such as digital confidence and peer influence.

Here’s what we discovered:

🔘 Gendered Challenges: Our research highlighted specific challenges women face, such as hesitance to share personal information and lower digital confidence compared to their male counterparts.

🔘Collaborative Solutions: By engaging with women micro-entrepreneurs, we identified opportunities to improve Pochi’s features and communication strategies.

🔘Next Steps: Safaricom is already working on implementing our recommendations, aiming for a more inclusive approach in their offerings.

Join us in exploring how targeted research and design can empower women in business.  Curious to learn more? Check out the full article by clicking the link in our bio👆🏾

🌟 Last week we took part in a workshop organized by Meta, in collaboration with , where we engaged parents and teenagers in discussions about digital well-being and online safety.
Through interactive theater, participants explored scenarios like cyberbullying and the impact of fake news. It was eye-opening to see how creative expression can lead to meaningful discussions.

💡One key takeaway? Parents and teens need to communicate openly about online experiences. Awareness is the first step in ensuring safety!

Let’s advocate for digital literacy and support each other in navigating the complexities of the online world. Together, we can create a safer environment for our kids.

💬 How do you ensure digital well-being in your family? Share your experiences and let’s keep this vital conversation alive in comments!👇🏾
