Engineers for Change Sierra Leone (EfCSL) is pleased to have officially launched ‘Strengthening the Competency of Engineering Professionals in Sierra Leone’ (StrepCOM-SL) pilot project on 16th July 2026 at the New Brookfields Hotel. This is an initiative designed to strengthen the practical competencies of early-career engineers and technicians through structured mentorship, supervised workplace experience, and continuous professional development(CPD).
This milestone has been made possible with funding from Lloyd's Register Foundation, which awarded EfCSL a £10,000 small grant to implement this one-year pilot in partnership with the Young Engineering Professionals Forum (YEPF). The Foundation's support reflects a shared commitment to developing engineering professionals who can contribute to safer practice, and stronger institutions,
The project brings together key stakeholders from the engineering profession, including the Professional Engineering Regulatory Council (PERC), the Sierra Leone Institution of Engineers (SLIE), academia, engineering firms, mentors, and development partners, to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice. Through workplace placements, competency assessments, mentor development, and continuous professional development. StrepCOM-SL seeks to equip the next generation of engineers with the skills, confidence, and ethical standards required to meet the evolving needs of Sierra Leone's infrastructure sector.
We extend our gratitude to Lloyd's Register Foundation for its confidence in our vision and for investing in the future of engineering in Sierra Leone. This support is an investment in people, professional excellence, and the long-term resilience of Sierra Leone's engineering sector.
We also thank our valued partners, including SLIE, PERC, participating engineering firms, mentors, and all stakeholders whose collaboration is making this initiative a reality.

YEPF ACTIVITIES AT THE SLIE BIENNIAL CONFERENCE 2026

The Young Engineering Professionals Forum (YEPF) was proud to contribute to the success of the Sierra Leone Institution of Engineers - SLIE (SLIE) Biennial Conference 2026 through a series of activities aimed at promoting innovation, collaboration, and professional development among young engineers.

A major highlight of our participation was the YEPF National University Hackathon, which brought together talented students from universities across Sierra Leone to develop innovative solutions to pressing engineering and environmental challenges, with the challenge statement: If you were given 50 million (new) Leones to solve one engineering problem in your community, what would you do?

The competition showcased remarkable creativity and technical ingenuity in areas such as flood management, water quality monitoring, and plastic waste management.
After an impressive display of innovation and teamwork, University of Management and Technology (UNIMTECH) emerged as the overall winners of the competition. Milton Margai College of Education&technology,goderich Campus (MMTU) secured the position of first runner-up, while Fourah Bay College - University of Sierra Leone (FBC) finished as second runner-up.

The Hackathon provided a platform for students to demonstrate their problem-solving abilities, creativity, and commitment to developing practical solutions that can contribute to sustainable national development.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all participating teams, mentors, judges, volunteers, and conference organizers for their invaluable support and dedication.

A special thank you goes to the CEO of Roy Global Limited SL, Mr. Yusif Roy Kargbo, for his generous donation towards the Hackathon prizes. His contribution played a significant role in recognizing and rewarding the exceptional efforts of the participants and reflects his commitment to nurturing the next generation of engineering professionals in Sierra Leone.

As YEPF continues to create opportunities for learning, innovation, and professional growth, we remain committed to empowering young engineers and fostering a culture of excellence within the engineering profession.

Engineers for Change (Sierra Leone) (EfCSL) and the Young Engineering Professionals Forum (YEPF) have secured a £10,000 grant from the Lloyds Register Foundation to support the development of young engineers in Sierra Leone.

This partnership is being implemented with the support of SLIE and PERC, with a shared commitment to fostering student participation through company-based and mentor support initiatives.

EfCSL and YEPF are pleased to announce the official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SLIE on the 7th of May 2026 and the Project Initiation Document (PID) with PERC on Thursday, 14th May 2026 at the SLIE/PERC Office.

The MOU was formally signed by the President of SLIE and the Chairman of PERC in the presence of four attendees, marking an important step toward strengthening collaboration in engineering mentorship and professional development.

This is a one-year pilot project that will facilitate guided practical training for recent engineering graduates and technicians. This mentorship program will bridge the gap between academic qualification and professional competence by embedding mentorship, competency monitoring and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) within companies and organization that employ engineering graduates. This in-turn will equip young engineering professionals in Sierra Leone to develop safer and more sustainable engineering practice.

The collaboration aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice by equipping university students with exposure to industry and mentorship opportunities from experienced engineering professionals.

EfCSL and YEPF remain committed to empowering the next generation of engineers by creating platforms that encourage innovation, knowledge sharing, leadership and sustainable professional growth.

We look forward to the positive impact this partnership will create for students and the engineering community at large. 🤝

The SLIE Conference Committee paid a courtesy visit to Hon. Dr. Ing. David Moinina Sengeh, Chief Minister of the Republic of Sierra Leone, as part of ongoing engagements ahead of the upcoming SLIE Biennial Conference.

During the meeting, the Committee formally extended an invitation to the Hon. Chief Minister to participate in the Conference and discussed the important role of engineering, innovation, and technology in advancing sustainable national development.

The Committee also highlighted the need to strengthen collaboration between government and the engineering profession in shaping the Sierra Leone we desire.

We appreciate his warm reception, insightful engagement, and continued commitment to supporting engineering, innovation, and national transformation in Sierra Leone.

Together, we continue to strengthen the engineering profession and drive sustainable development.
