This childโ€™s vulnerability was not created by one moment alone. It was shaped by poverty, neglect, and unsafe conditions where survival too often depends on risking oneโ€™s safety.
Our team supported the survivor to ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜ and ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ at the ๐—ฅ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฏ๐—ผ ๐—–๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ, and we will continue monitoring the case closely.

But cases like this also expose another difficult reality: families often cannot afford the cost of seeking justice, including transportation, medical follow-up, and documentation. Yet local organizations like ours cannot turn survivors and their families away. We carry these responsibilities with extremely limited resources.
Child protection requires stronger investment in safeguarding systems, survivor support services, and community-based organizations already doing this work every day.

Today, we recognize and celebrate the dignity of work, and the millions of workers whose contributions sustain our economies, communities, and homes.

At ๐—”๐—น๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐——๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜, we take this moment to especially acknowledge the critical contributions of ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ปโ€™๐˜€ ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ฑ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฐ ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ธ, work that is foundational to society but continues to be undervalued

Evidence shows the scale of this imbalance. According to ๐—จ๐—ก ๐—ช๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป, women spend an average of ๐Ÿฐ.๐Ÿฏ ๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐˜€ ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜† on unpaid care and domestic work, nearly three times more than men, who spend ๐Ÿญ.๐Ÿฒ ๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐˜€. This unequal distribution limits womenโ€™s opportunities to participate fully in paid employment and economic life.

In Sierra Leone, where women make up ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฎ.๐Ÿญ% ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐˜‚๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป, labour force participation is relatively high for both ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป (๐Ÿณ๐Ÿญ.๐Ÿฑ%) ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป (๐Ÿณ๐Ÿฑ.๐Ÿฑ%). Yet these figures mask a deeper injustice:

โ€ข ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿฌ.๐Ÿญ% ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป are engaged in unpaid domestic and care work

We must speak honestly: womenโ€™s unpaid domestic and care work falls outside the scope of Sierra Leoneโ€™s labour laws and policies, yet it is this work that makes conflict-free homes possible, keeps families functioning, and subsidizes the economy every day.

Working closely with the school leadership, teachers, and students, this partnership focuses on:

๐Ÿ”ถStrengthening safeguarding and child protection systems within the school
๐Ÿ”ถEstablishing clear reporting protocols and referral mechanisms
๐Ÿ”ถBuilding the capacity of teachers to act as first responders and safeguarding focal persons
๐Ÿ”ถSupporting student-led clubs that promote dialogue, awareness and positive action

The AiD school clubs provide safe spaces where students learn to recognize, prevent and respond to gender-based violence, raise awareness, and contribute to a culture of respect and equality, both within their schools and the wider community.

Through engagements like this, we continue to strengthen school communities and move
closer to our shared goal of safety for women and girls.

International Womenโ€™s Day is more than a celebration; it is a critical platform for change. As civil society and government actors in Sierra Leone commemorate progress, we must ask: Are we achieving impact, or are we simply following a routine?

Despite decades of advocacy, the statistics tell a sobering story:
